We already know that on the national level it does not parse out the way you want it to; the states with the highest ratio of (money back from the federal government) : (money paid to federal government in taxes) are all in the south where people are bitching that the federal government is holding them down.

Wealth of Congress Jumps $150 Million. This link substantially refutes your assertion about the South => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-income_counties_in_the_United_States
You're technically correct, in that the DC Metro area is below the Mason-Dixon line. Yeah, it's the South, but don't kid yourself: this is the Progressive Plantation House. Precious little agriculture afoot, though. Oh, who cares: keep kidding yourself. You do it so well.

Unless you are the sort of disconcertingly disciplined and organized person who sets up a monitoring and alerting system for their dinky little desktop, you probably aren't talking about 'the hard drive'. At a minimum, you are probably dealing with some flavor of RAID, or ZFS, or an iSCSI LUN farmed out by some SAN that does its own mysterious thing behind the expensive logo, or some other additional complexity. Flash SSDs are also increasingly likely to be involved, quite possibly along with some RAM caches in various places.

There's probably a business in making retro computers as DIY kits. Sure, some company would have to re-manufacture the parts that couldn't be made at home and with small runs the parts wouldn't be cheap, but there is a hobbyist market out there.

Yup.

There are often limits on authenticity, either due to parts availability (e.g. TTL ICs), or for convenience (modern monitors, keyboards).

Comment It is terrorism regardless of target. (Score 1) 529

Are you inferring that it is only terrorism if the target is important enough or the number if victims is high enough? You are sadly mistaken then.

This was textbook terrorism, a loud public statement and nothing at all personal. The terrorist shot and killed a ceremonial military guard at the cenotaph, a monument honouring our fallen soldiers. If that doesnt make a statement of hatred and distain for a nation then what does?

The terrorists very next act was to proceed directly to the centre block of parliament, where the prime minister and his cabinet were meeting. He was fatally shot by the seargant at arms, who found the criminal roaming the halls looking for more victims.

There is no doubt here at all.

I have done enough super high mileage trips that it would require a second car permanently on stand by. That means double insurance, tax, storage and depreciation.

it means none of those things but storage cost. The insurance for the second vehicle is reduced, and often the insurance on your primary vehicle is reduced when you add another vehicle to your policy, even if you don't decrease the primary vehicle's mileage. And you get an older vehicle for the second car, and it costs you less to buy, less in depreciation, etc.

It still might not work out, but it doesn't cost twice as much.

As a matter of fact, those states allowing fracking have reaped huge tax benefits and for the most part has helped out ordinary citizens of those states too.

in the short term, sure. But injecting refinery wastes into the ground was illegal before fracking for a reason, and that reason is that it's toxic waste.
