Comment Re:longevity worth it? (Score 1) 333

It's not a question of giving up and wanting to curl up in the corner to die. If I can't sustain a reasonable quality of life in those "extra" years aided by modern medicine, I don't think it would be something I would want to do. Living to 100 but having to spend the last 10 years being tended to by a live-in nurse.. I don't see that as worth it. Once I lose my ability to be independent I do not want to artifically extend my life.

You totally missed the point. Sure, medicine can extend my life, advances have been doing that for centuries.

Just because medicine can keep my body alive an additional 20 years does not mean I would welcome that if my mind is gone or if my joints are all shot or if I have to rely on a mountain of daily pills or therapy to get going. I look at it as a Quality vs Quantity of life.

Of course I want to live a long time and experience many things. I will do what I can to extend this to the point where I can do it independently.

I don't know about how anyone else feels but I do not necessarily want long life unless I can maintain my youthfulness. I'm 34 now and still stay active but obviously my body is already on the decline (comparing myself to myself at age 24). I do not expect to stay in peak condition when I'm age 80.. but I also don't want to live 40 more years if I have to rely on someone else to do standard tasks

If they determined he wasn't drinking or doing drugs, they'd probably let him go. My dad is a retired cop so maybe (well, probably) there is some bias on my end.. I grew up around most of the guys on the department, sure there were a couple pricks but most of them were just normal guys when off-duty. Despite popular sentiment, they aren't out there looking to ruin someone's day just to get their rocks off.

The amount of paper work that needs to be done to write a speeding ticket is prohibitive to most cops to be frivilous. Maybe they'll pull you over for going 5mph over the speed limit at 2am just to verify you're not drunk. 9 times out of 10, if you are not drunk, you go with nothing but a verbal warning.

I don't think the survey is very fair for the question about the Big Bang. I consider myself well informed and try to keep at least a layman's understanding of scientific breakthrough. I understand the concept behind the Big Bang but cannot understand most of the hard science behind it.

Am I willing to take someone else's word just because? I don't possess the knowledge to verify their research. In my opinion, most people should be uncertain because it's not something we're ever likely to prove.

My initial reaction was to vote for the first option, anyone who is willing to go off to their certain death is more than welcome to. Then I started to think about it more and decided that I would hope there was a decent chance those individuals could set up a sustainable colony at their destination.

My reasoning is quite simple, if we can't accomplish that then maybe we aren't ready to send humans on missions like that.

I took two things from the summary (no, I did not RTFA)

1) GM modified the part but did not change the part number. I am not familiar with their part number structure but typically any physical change to the part changes the identifier. It makes me curious if the supplier had been buiding it wrong all that time.

2) Someone at Delphi and GM knew of the issue but either determined on their own that there was no threat or purposely decided to sweep it under the rug.

It's worthy of more investigation.
