FliesLikeABrick writes: "The Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter has unveiled that Linspire announced that they will be switching to base their distribution off Ubuntu. With their polished KDE desktop this makes Linspire the latest in the impressive list of operating systems based off Kubuntu.

It was also announced that Linspire's Click and Run install programme would be added to the Ubuntu archive, giving users of all Ubuntu distributions easy access to a large range of free and proprietary software."

An anonymous reader writes: The Star news online has an article on getting out of 2-year cell phone contracts.. It discusses attempts made by people to get out of contracts. "Pretending to be dead, however, does not work well as a way to break a contract. Sprint Nextel, Verizon and Cingular, for example, may ask for a death certificate. T-Mobile says it does not." It also discusses other "strategies" such as joining the military, moving to a roaming location and so on. Any slashdot readers have interesting experiences on cancelling cell phone contracts, successes and failures?

The namesake and creator of the file systems ReiserFS and Reiser4, Hans Reiser, will probably have to appear in front of a California court shortly, due to the accusation of murder. Reiser has been behind bars since the middle of October 2006, after his wife Nina at the end of of Septembers living in separation disappeared without trace. In house and car of the Linux programmer traces of his wife's blood were found.

Although the police could not find a corpse, the judge found that there are sufficient reasons to believe that Reiser must have been at least involved in the disappearing of his wife. For example is still missing the passenger seat of Reisers car, which was removed short time after Nina Reisers disappearing. Reisers lawyer assumes now within the next 90 days officially accusation is raised against its mandator.

Perhaps it would have been more believable if he'd claimed he thought he was a gnome?

Guess I don't understand. You nudge your case rather harshly many times? Why would anybody do that and be surprised when something fails?

Maybe the real problem was poor quality CD media, or a burner with firmware issues, or BurnProof wasn't enabled and the machine couldn't keep up with the data stream (possibly because DMA wasn't configured for the controller).

Don't get me wrong: I still have occasional maintenance jobs that require a floppy, but would much rather use CD/flash.
