Comment Youtuber covered this before slashdot :O (Score 2) 187

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htTs9CC52cA She brings up some pretty interesting points. I was thinking about getting one as well but I'm definitely not anymore, not after this. I've also seen a few sites defending Nintendo because it "protects against piracy". When I asked the girl who covered this on her youtube channel she said she thinks it's not about piracy at all, but that Nintendo is using Piracy as an excuse to radically control its users and profit off of them. Interesting points, even if a bit "extreme".

The Design Failures That Led To Rock Band 177

CNN is running an interview with Eran Egozy and Alex Rigopulos, founders of Harmonix, about the long road that eventually led them to the creation of Guitar Hero and Rock Band . It wasn't an quick or easy process, and the two worked on a number of unsuccessful concepts before arriving at the games that redefined a genre. Quoting: "I was watching people interact with our product, and the realization came crashing down on me — we had spent 18 months on a music system that was fundamentally flawed. Karaoke isn't about personal expression. It's about people reproducing the songs they know as accurately as they can. The whole notion of adding improvisation elements just wasn't connecting. So I retreated to my hotel room and was depressed for the next two days. The company was on the rocks. We had zero revenue. We had been trying for four years to make something work. We were out of ideas. Those first four years had been a graveyard of mis-starts and product concepts that never made it anywhere. Worse, there was adequate information about two years into those four years to realize that our big concept was fatally flawed."

RIAA Says CDs Should Cost More 540

EatingSteak writes "The folks over at Techdirt just put up a great story today, with the RIAA claiming the cost of a CD has gone down significantly relative to the consumer price index. The RIAA 'Key Facts' page claims that based on the 1983 price of CDs, the 1996 price should have been $33.86. So naturally, you should feel like you're getting a bargain. Sounds an awful lot like the cable companies saying cable prices are really going down even though they're going up."

Firefox 3 Plans and IE8 Speculation 274

ReadWriteWeb writes "Information about the next versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer suggest that the two biggest browsers are heading in different directions. Mozilla has published a wiki page detailing its plans for the next version of Firefox, codenamed 'Gran Paradiso'. Among the mandatory requirements listed for FF3 are improving the add-on experience, providing an extensible bookmarks back-end platform, adding more support for web services "to act as content handlers" — all of which show that Firefox wants to be an independent information broker rather than a simple HTML renderer in its next version. Also in the works is Microsoft's IE8. According to ActiveWin.com, a Microsoft official at CES told them that work has already begun for IE 8 and it may be released as a final product 'within 18-24 months'. Looking ahead, it's obvious that IE will continue to hook into the advanced functionality that Vista offers."

Submission + - Epson Closes American Tech Support; Moves to Asia

Rukawa Kaede writes: "According to this report from DailyTech, Epson is shutting down its North American call centers and outsourcing all support to some third party in the Philippines. I can understand the business decision behind this, as everyone is out to save a buck or two, but I still feel rather uneasy when my phone calls get routed to some developing country. If given the option, I might even be willing to pay a few dollars more for my hardware if tech support were to stay on a little bit more familiar ground. Score one for globalization, I guess."

I just got my first cell phone two weeks ago, and I'm 20. I did fine without one all that time and even now I don't use it all that often. I really only got one because I won't have a landline phone in my apartment (though, I will admit, it is nice to have just in case and has proved handy a few times). Even so I mostly use it as a watch :P
