Comment I'm not sure I understand the question. (Score 2) 848

Your software could make life easier for everyone on your team. Surely, this will trickle down to making your life easier, too.
You already know they won't buy the stuff. So why are you looking for profit in a place where you know there is none to be found?
If it's so great then prove it: Sell it online. If you sell enough copies it will pay for itself and then you can afford to give it to your school for free.
Not only does that help your career but - as a condition of sale - you can use it as a marketing ploy and the school becomes one of your test beds for updates.
Everybody wins.

Real Life Super Hero Arrested Screenshot-sm 590

First time accepted submitter Pat Attack writes "In an ironic twist of fate, Phoenix Jones, a self-styled super hero from Seattle, has landed in jail. Jones happened upon a group of people fighting in the street and tried to stop the fight using pepper spray. He was arrested by police on four counts of assault. The New York Daily News quotes Jones: 'I've been shot once and I don't really want it to happen again. I've been stabbed twice, hit with a baseball bat and had my nose broken,' he says. 'But in all those incidents I helped someone who was in danger. If someone is going to take that punishment it should be the guy in body armor,' he said."

Comment Linux will never be the dominant desktop. So what. (Score 1) 591

  1. The OS matters less every day. As long as the web browser is compliant and the OS is invisible, 99% of users are happy.
  2. Since Linux utterly fails to be invisible (I have never had to 'man' anything in OSX) it is hindering its own acceptance
  3. Only an organized group with a plan is ever going to make a difference. The kind of boys who want to work on linux are hard-headed, stubborn loners who want it their way. They will never worry about the end user's experience. They will only work with others as long as it suits them. This kind of selfish treachery is we can't have nice things.
  4. The only people who crow about the year of the linux desktop are the people who get paid to write fluff pieces for tech blogs.

Stop it, already. You're embarrassing me as a member of the human race.

Groupon Could Challenge Google's Record IPO 245

jbrodkin writes "Months after spurning Google's $6 billion takeover bid, Groupon may topple Google's IPO record with an initial public offering worth $25 billion. Google went public in 2004 with a $24.6 billion valuation and Groupon seems to be on the verge of an IPO worth even more, Dow Jones VentureSource says. Even if Groupon doesn't break Google's record, it seems likely to become only the fifth venture-backed company to achieve a $10 billion valuation at the time of its IPO."

I am going to attend a Texas university. My masters thesis will be to study the theory that evolution happens when I sleep with the wives of politicians and university staff. Now, remember, you can't say no to my thesis or discriminate against me in any way. In fact, you should probably lend a hand in order to appear completely unbiased.
