Yes. There's something seriously wrong with that graphic. It doesn't add up. Consider for example the Obama White House claim of debt under Bush: 12.7 T. But they arrive at that number by comparing an estimate, in this case a projected savings, against an actual deficit. There's nothing objective about that comparison because you're not comparing two values computed in the same manner.

I looked the Treasury Dept's own figures.
Jan, 2001 (Month/Year Bush took office): $5.7T
Jan, 2008 (Month/Year of transition): $9.2T
Today: $15.1T

According to the Treasury Dept then, the debt increased during Bush's 8 years by $3.5T. In the almost 4 years since Obama took office, the debt has increased an additional $5.9T. The White House only takes responsibility for $1.4T in their graphic. Either the Treasury of the White House need to explain the significant discrepancy in those numbers.

I would not recommend working in that environment as a newbie civilian. It would be one thing if you had a military background and knew what you were getting into. I will assume that is not the case given the questions you are asking.

Rather, I suggest that if you really yearn to see another part of the globe (an educational and eye-opening experience for most Americans) go somewhere other than the countries you mentioned. While you are deciding where that might be, consider perusing the State Department Travel Alert system (or whoever maintains that data today). That will provide you some idea of which locales might be safer than others.

Even so, he still strikes me as an a**. His comments on Steve Jobs are both churlish and ironic. The irony is that I consider them to share a certain single mindedness of purpose and a string of odd personal traits. Somehow, I expect RMS would be insulted at the prospect of having that in common.

Combine that with the capability described in the proposal and the use of photographs as evidence at trial may soon be inadmissible. Or at the very least, a legal team could reasonably claim that a photo had been doctored (whether true or not) and therefore render such evidence unusable by the prosecution.

Look at the currently popular notion in the US that to run government, we need someone with experience running a private corporation. As if running a business had anything in common with running a government except they are both organizations. If that were the true measure, then a general would make the best president and we've seen that's not usually the case. In fact, I'd say that "business experience" or "experience" in general (other than experience dealing with people) is highly overrated. Right now, there's going to be only one person running for president in 2012 that actually has on-the-job experience as president of the US. Does that make him automatically the best person for the job? Does the fact that a leading candidate on the other side ran a business that successfully cannibalized other businesses make him the best person for the job?

This line of thinking got us a President with zero experience of any useful kind. He had no experience running any kind of large organization be it public, private or military. Part of a year going through the motions of being a Congressman does not count. We are seeing the result of that.

Both major parties (not one, both) need to set aside their posturing and pontificating for the benefit of their fringe constituencies. This country has serious problems. We need a frank discussion of the solutions followed by non-partisan action. Let's put an end to any activity that only benefits a small portion of the citizenship. Halt useless Congressional activity that only serves political parties and their patronage. The time for such nonsense is long over. Let's get to work.

Our country was founded on the ideal of "No taxation without representation". It appears that somewhere along the line something flipped to where we have "Representation without taxation" for a hell of a chunk of our population.

And yet, if you live in DC you ARE taxed without representation. Better yet, despite the fact that there is a mayor and a city council, members of congress seem to have no qualms about interfering in DC's financial and other affairs. The residents of DC deserve the same rights as the citizens of any other state. Puerto Rico is in the same position.

Until that's defined, I have to side with "same percentage". Someone show me what's fair about progressive tax rates anyway. You're always left at the whim of some politician to determine what your "fair share" is. Establish what constitutes "taxable" (from among income, investments returns, assorted gains, etc) and apply a flat tax rate.
