Australian Govt Holding Secretive Anti-Piracy Talks 218

daria42 writes "Looks like Australia's Government prefers to keep its ongoing anti-piracy discussions behind closed doors. It held an initial meeting in September last year to try to get the content and ISP industries to thrash out an agreement on how to handle Internet piracy. Consumer representative groups were explicitly blocked from attending the meeting, and attendees are not allowed to reveal what was discussed behind closed doors. Now a second meeting has been held, and again, no information has been revealed about what's being discussed. Quelle conspiracy?"

SandmanWAIX writes: A recent Australian Federal Court ruling found in favour of major telco Optus and determined they are not in breach of copyright with their TV Now service. This service allows mobile phone customers to record/watch free-to-air tv calling in to question the value of exclusivity deals signed with other major carriers.

“Telstra has exclusive online broadcast rights for both the AFL and NRL, and its latest online deal with the AFL for the 2012-16 seasons cost the telco $153 million.”

"What's a matter for us is considering whether or not there needs to be changes to the copyright laws in view of these circumstances," Prime Minister Gillard said.

What would it take to actually get someone to actively pursue something like this?
Which department/agency is responsible for investigating claims like this?
Is it something that our slashdot group could bring to their attention?

Scientists Develop Super-Slippery Material 298

Hugh Pickens writes writes "Anyone who is partial to ketchup with their food will know how difficult it is to get the final dregs from the bottle but now the Telegraph reports that scientists have created one of the most slippery materials ever that promises to result in new self-cleaning surfaces that never get dirty, could be used to coat the inside of bottles and jars to help consumers get all of the food inside, or in the energy industry for making oil flow more efficiently through pipes. Professor Joanna Aizenberg, a materials scientists at Harvard University, was inspired by the carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plants, which has a highly slippery surface at the top of its flute-shaped leaves so that insects tumble down into the digestive juices contained inside. The new material, known as a Slippery Liquid Infused Porous Surface or SLIPS boasts a rare trait called "omniphobicity", which means it can repel both water and oily materials. "If we used substance like ours to coat the inside of bottles, it would be possible to get it all out," says Aizenberg. "The only problem may be that the sauce may come out a little too easily on to their food.""

The game seems to mostly be a success with more positive points than negative. Do you think it lives up to the hype, and is the price justified? mykos writes: AMD's new 32nm Zacate ultra-low voltage Fusion processor, handling both graphics and CPU functions, will be heading to manufacturers at the end of 2010 destined for PCs in 2011. AMD showed off some impressive technical and practical demonstrations including video games and web browser hardware acceleration, showing off some impressive performance numbers in 3D gaming and hardware-accelerated web browsing. It looks like 2011 is shaping up to be a good year for ULV devices.

It all depends on what output you need?

DAD software has the ability to customize data types, multiple inheritance of objects, and to define different relationship types.

You can then trace along object relationships bringing back a dynamic graphic depending on what you want to show (and spit out to PDF).

Blaming the economic crisis, Google management has canceled the traditional cash holiday bonus — reportedly as much as $20K-$30K per Googler — and substituted an unlocked Google Android cell phone, retail price $400. An accompanying email calls for employees to celebrate the 'chance for us to once again dogfood a product and make it even better!'" Update: 12/23 01:09 GMT by KD : A reader pointed out that comments to the article note a couple of inaccuracies: the Android phone being offered is an unlocked dev model, which goes for $400; and the reporter may have confused holiday bonuses with performance bonuses. The former have traditionally been in the range of $1,000, according to two comments.
