It's pretty obvious I'm trolling him, and my journal isn't exactly secret, so he's probably read these last few entries about his stupidity... but he keeps biting on every bit of bait I throw out. Should I lay off him since he's this stupid or keep at it? I didn't let off GNUALMAFUERTE and the lulz were quite intense toward the end, so I favor keeping the faggotry up.

What do we learn from this exchange? I'll summarize:
1. GooberToo is an idiot. A huge, elitist idiot. EDIT: GooberToo is a bigger idiot than I previously thought; read on for details. Actually, read the thread for details and lulz.
2. John Jamieson thinks people should switch to Linux because the installers are "more fun to watch."
3. You can be banned (like I was) for pissing off someone with a low (less than 100000) UID.
4. Taco hasn't figured out yet that when his crappy Slashcode insta-bans someone for pissing off one of his homeboys that they'll just get a new IP and post some more (like I am now).

Maybe I'm not done with this site after all!

So I installed Ubuntu 6.06.1 on a machine around here recently, mostly because I need TeX for some stuff I'm doing and MiKTeX on XP seems to butcher some of the stuff I throw at it. Anyway, I noticed that the default install of Ubuntu now has a BitTorrent tracker running on it.

Didn't Microsoft used to get in trouble for doing stuff like this? Everyone praises several Linux distributions for shipping with no services running by default; Mac OS X is the same way. But, there it was - I could connect to the machine on port 6969 with Firefox and I had a nice web page stating how the tracker wasn't tracking any files. The best part is how if you navigate to /etc/default and look at the file bittorrent with your favorite editor, it has some line like START_TRACKER=0; when that variable is set to zero, the tracker isn't supposed to start, but there it was - started anyway. Disabling it was simple enough - sudo /etc/init.d/bittorrent stop did the trick.

The fact of the matter is that even if this isn't tracking anything, it's still pretty stupid. I would think that if you were going to ship with a service enabled, something like OpenSSH would be a little better, since it's much more secure. I don't know a whole lot about the security record of torrent trackers but I imagine it's not as good as that of OpenSSH. Besides, if it isn't tracking any files by default (it would be clever to track an ISO of the distribution), what's the point of enabling it by default?

Anyway, I'm not sure if this is insecure or not, and I don't really care. In the interests of full disclosure they should mention this during the install, but they do not. So, I've determined that Ubuntu sucks - I didn't like the crappy default brown theme, the stupid drums on the GDM screen, or the ugly IMHO startup screen anyway. I'm looking for a new distribution. Gentoo is way too labor intensive, so I won't be running that again. I'm thinking of giving Slackware a try, but it always seems to me to be somewhat osbolete in its package choice. Any suggestions?

Okay, earlier today the article about OpenOffice.org failing at security was posted by Zonk, again. I was right in the middle of posting a "DUPE!" troll and when I clicked submit, it bitched that "no article or comments were found" or some such shit. That's the first time I've noticed a story being taken down for duping. I guess Zonk's feelings were hurt by the masses yelling "DUPE!"

My main machine had (correct use of past tense) a 160 GB Seagate IDE hard drive in it. I bought this because everyone says Seagate is the creme de la creme of hard disks - they're supposed to be reliable and such. Anyway, I installed this in February... and now on Saturday the thing died. Wow, how reliable. I have a replacement disk on the way, a Western Digital. Anyway, it's under warranty, but the Seagate replacement disks are refurbs - which doesn't exactly make me feel comfortable.

Oh well - at least my 269 GB of porn is backed up.

I recently had a Maxtor drive in an external enclosure die on me (yes, I know, Maxtor sucks) so I was in the market for another disk. I had a 120 GB Western Digital in this machine and Newegg had 320 GB drives of the same brand on sale, so I bought one to replace the 120 GB. Now, this machine has 1x 160 GB and 3x 320 GB inside, with the 320s set up as a RAID0 volume. That much hard drive space ought to be able to handle a LOT of porn, don't you think?

Also, I've been listening a lot lately to an old Eddie Murphy comedy CD from the 80s (which coincidentally was when I was born). It's funny because there's this part where he talks about languages and how arabs have the sound you make when you cough up phlegm as a word in Arabic. I was listening to this on my iPod at my work the other day, which coincidentally happens to have a lot of Arabic people working (it's at a university), and about peed my pants. I guess I shouldn't play that too loud, huh?

So I tried to wipe Windows XP off my main machine Monday night and replace with the new release of Ubuntu. I figured that Vista was going to be kind of gay, so why not try Ubuntu?

I don't know what I was thinking. I have a nice SoundBlaster X-fi sound card, which Linux wouldn't support. Any operating system which requires you to install a different sound card is stupid in my book. Also, LVM is completely retarded compared to Windows' volume management. To configure LVM, you have to have partitions on the disk to dedicate to LVM, right? But when you start the LVM manager up, you just allocate those partitions into groups which you then format. So, I had to create partitions on my 120 GB HDD and my 2x 320 GB HDDs for LVM which were grouped together into a large 760 GB group, which I then had to create a partition on and format to ext3 to store anything. How retarded.

Anyway, the moral of this story is that anyone who says Linux is ready for the desktop is full of shit. Besides, I wouldn't have been able to watch all my pr0n on Ubuntu, and everyone knows that's what the Internet really is for, right?

Last year I held this competition on Trolltalk but given that 20721 is in a perpetual state of crapflood I figured I would hold it here. However, there's no need to even hold an election as we all know it's still GNUALMAFUERTE. Unfortunately, he hasn't posted in almost two months. I wonder if I finally got to him?

I posted a few months back about wanting to find some adapter to mount a 3.5" hard disk in a 5.25" bay. I ended up not going that route; I just replaced two of my disks with 320 GB SATA disks. I have a ton of storage now.

The system runs Windows XP Professional, and right now, both hard drives are set up as a spanned volume along with a smaller 120 GB IDE disk. I know that this isn't redundant, but I make frequent backups and stuff so I should be okay.

My question is about striping. I've heard quite a few people say that striping a volume makes it significantly faster, and I know in theory that it does. Does anyone have experience with XP's volume striping feature? Is the speed worth it?

I'm seriously thinking about backing this shit up again and striping the two SATA disks. The problem with that is that I can't stripe the 120 GB IDE drive with it; well, I could, but it would reduce the size of the volume significantly. I could just use the 120 GB disk like a normal drive, but I think I might leave it clean and dual boot with Lunix or something.

A few weeks back VMware stated that they were going to give away their server product for free. Today I downloaded a copy and it's just like the old workstation product was and better, but it brings me to an interesting question: who in the hell is going to bother downloading the player now? The player is basically just the old workstation product sans the ability to create VMs, making it crippleware. The server product is free as in anal sex from Taco's wife and has the ability to create VMs.
