Comment No, its the case for whining (Score 1) 87

If you don't want to watch the video -for whatever reason- almost all of the courses provide the text of the close captioning. Download and read that along with any other lecture notes that are available. Better yet, just troll Amazon for the "best" book on the subject as that is all you really want anyway.

The rest of us, who actually do want the video because, have among many reasons, a) we find the pace to be more conducive to long term learing, b) we like to take notes while we listen, c) (course dependent) we like to see problems worked out with verbal explanation, d) we like to hear the occasional question from those in physical attendance or as result of those posted to message boards.

I was recently at a homeowners assoc. annual meeting. There were no pitchforks or tar and feathers and yet in person attendance was just over 50% and total (by proxy) over 70%.

When people care about something or some place and feel that their input really does count, they will be engaged.

When people feel it truly does not matter which shithead is elected to Congress or the White Hourse, turnout will be poor.

If you want to peek at a text message or a reminder during a meeting, would you rather look at your watch or awkwardly dig your phone out of your pocket? That alone will be worth the price for some.

I believe looking at his watch during a meeting of sorts lost Bush #1 his re-election. Isn't it considered quite rude by most to keep looking at your watch in any social setting?

Speaking of text messages, phone theft has dropped as kill switches have become commonplace. But if you're in a "bad" neighborhood at night, would you rather discretely check your watch for a text, or whip out your $700 smartphone?

It sounds like the prices of these iWatches are not all that far removed from the cost of iPhone. Is it something you really want to be flashing in that situation?

If you live in Seattle and like to bike, would you like to be able to throw your phone into a plastic bag in a backpack in case it rains, yet still be able to answer a call?

Isn't bluetooth an option on helmets already?

The consequence that you only thought that "rude" "offensive" "racicist" "*-phobic" people who posted anonymously on the internet only lived far, far away?

It really is amazing how weak and thin skinned people today are. Is the nursery school play ground change "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me" today replaced by "but name will kill me!" ???

Comment black markets (Score 2) 284

Is 10 years enough if you sell/buy bootleg cigarettes or booze? Instead of looking at the fundamental issue (cost) that creates the black markets, the "leaders" seek ever higher penalties that never seem to stop the undesired actions.

it is all about pricing and availability. If the media companies want to reduce piracy then make their products priced and available in a manner that people want - that need not equat to "free". If instead, they insist on maintaining prices and policies that encourage blackmarkets, they should treat it as a cost of doing business.
