Scientists Turn Used LCDs Into Medicine 30

schliz writes "Scientists from the University of York have come up with a new recycling technique that extracts PVA from used LCD panels to create a 'a bioactive sponge.' The technique could allow recovered PVA to be used in pills, wound dressings and tissue scaffolds that aid human tissue regeneration. It could also keep waste LCD screens from incineration or landfill altogether."

Is there a dispute resolution mechanism if I happen to be a Frenchman who's been falsely accused three times (I'm not French, and I haven't been accused of filesharing, I'm just curious).

But have you ever been accused of being French?

If someone accuses you of being French three times, you get to pass unfair laws that no one wants.

KentuckyFC writes: "Does the universe have a preferred direction — an axis of evil as some astrophyscists have called it? It certainly looks that way with the publication today of a survey of 200,000 elliptical galaxies that indicates they are all aligned in the same direction. What's more, this axis is the same as the controversial alignment found in the cosmic microwave background by the WMAP spacecraft"

An anonymous reader writes: Do you remember the massive cave found on Mars by the NASA's MRO? They have taken another picture looking from the west, with the sun also shinning from the west, so part of the eastern wall is visible now. The HiRISE team confirms that this pit is essentially a vertical shaft cut through the lava flows on the flank of the volcano.

An anonymous reader writes: The top ranking spyware is Gator. A significant aspect of 2006 has been the appearance of a new category of malware. Rogue antispyware claims to detect spyware or to repair errors. This increasingly prevalent malware detects flaws or malicious code on computers but then demands that users pay for a registered version of the program if they want to delete these threats.

Submission + - Hormel & Spam Arrest - Trademark Battle To End

An anonymous reader writes: Spam Arrest LLC Continues Its Trademark Fight Against Hormel

After a Half Million in Fees, the Final Hearing in Spam Arrest's Long Battle Against Hormel Will Occur in New York, Feb. 23, 2007 Before a Live Audience of Trademark Attorneys

Seattle, WA (PRWeb) January 8, 2007 — Spam Arrest LLC, which provides the popular web service software to eliminate email spam, hopes to end its four year legal battle against Hormel next month.

Spam Arrest is the only company ever, except Hormel Foods Corporation, to secure a trademark including the word "spam" recorded on the principal United States trademark register. For nearly four years, Spam Arrest has defended its trademark against Hormel's lawsuit seeking to cancel the SPAM ARREST trademark registration.

The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, the federal administrative court charged with overseeing the national trademark office, has decided to hold the final hearing for case number 92042134, Hormell vs. Spam Arrest, before a live audience of trademark lawyers in New York City. The hearing will take place at the Practicing Law Institute in New York on February 23, 2007.

Spam Arrest has incurred almost $500,000 defending its trademark rights. "We've spent years fighting for our trademark, while much larger companies have simply abandoned their trademark applications after threats from Hormel," said Brian Cartmell, CEO of Spam Arrest. "Not one person confuses our anti-spam service with Hormel's canned meat — the average American consumer is smarter than that."

"Spam Arrest is defending not only their own trademark, but the right of every anti-spam company in America to use the term 'spam' in marketing and branding," added Derek A. Newman of Newman & Newman, lead counsel for Spam Arrest. "There are hundreds of companies affected by Hormel's overly broad interpretation of its rights, and hopefully Spam Arrest will ensure that all such businesses can accurately describe products that combat spam."

"No matter the outcome of the hearing," said Cartmell, "Spam Arrest will continue to provide the best anti-spam service in the world, saving businesses and consumers both time and money by eliminating the hassle of unwanted email."

Spam Arrest has successfully prevented billions of unwanted communications (i.e. SPAM) from reaching customer email boxes since 2001.

Star Trek Legacy Review 242

Since late last month, I've been playing with the Xbox 360 title Star Trek Legacy. The fact that it is not a great game should be no surprise. Despite some entertaining plot elements, the title's gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. What is confusing, and troubling, is that this is just the latest in a long line of disappointing Trek games. Looking back on the history of Star Trek gaming, games like Elite Force or A Final Unity stand out from a disturbingly large field of titles that over-promise and under-deliver on the well-loved Trek universe. Why is it so hard to make a good Trek game? Why do developers keep trying and failing? Why is there a Vulcan leading the Borg? Read on for consideration of each of these questions, and a review of Star Trek Legacy to boot.

Submission + - TV Wonder Enables HTPCs to Tune High-Def Cable

AnInkle writes: The Tech Report raises tough questions in their coverage of AMD's TV Wonder. The new digital cable tuner finally enables PCs (Vista-powered only) to tune high-def cable. Bolstering the LIVE! brand's media center PC credentials, AMD adds this announcement to several others already released. But the product's suffocating DRM compliance and unavailability to DIY PC enthusiasts nearly kills its appeal. Though cable providers are on board and Xbox 360 owners can use their console as a Media Center extender for high-def programs recorded by the TV Wonder, small PC vendors and PC builders who've used an HTPC for years now aren't invited to the high-def party.
