So if you had access to all of today's technology, and you were designing a software distribution mechanism....

You would put the software on little plastic disks that can't be updated after they are written...
Put those disks in expensive packaging.
Put those disks on consignment with a company that will truck/fly those disks around the country.
To other companies that will put the disks on shelves in stores where consumers can buy them (during business hours).

That doesn't seem very efficient.

Submission + - EU study: open source increases competitiveness

Rob writes: Increased use of free and open source software in Europe could increase the region's competitiveness with the US, according to a European Commission study. "Given Europe's historically lower ability to create new software businesses compared to the US, due to restricted venture capital and risk tolerance, the high share of European FLOSS developers provides a unique opportunity to create new software businesses and reach towards the Lisbon goals of making Europe the most competitive knowledge economy by 2010," states the report.

Submission + - CES 2007: Gaming roundup

jasoncart writes: "Traditionally, gaming's calendar year of expos, conventions, and trade shows doesn't generally kick off in earnest until March's fanfare arrival of the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, which thus opens the floodgates for a host of industry platform events. However, before July's new-fangled E3 Media and Business Summit (the now scaled back, renamed, and invitation-only E3 of legend) shifts into view alongside August's Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), September's Tokyo Game Show (TGS), and the newly announced and ESA-endorsed Entertainment for All Expo in October (previously known as the Gamepro Expo), it falls to January's annual Consumer Electronics Show to whet our collective appetites-at least where related hardware is concerned."

Submission + - Terrorist Proof IT based Infrastructure for Iraq?

kgskgs writes: "OK, so like it or not, we are in Iraq and it is messed up. The question is, what is the best that can be done at this point?

The whole vision behind Internet was to prevent destruction of vital information in a strategic nuclear attack. Can this vision be extended to reduce / eliminate the destruction caused by tactical attacks by terrorists? Can Iraq be made an example of modern society which functions mostly online? Can we come up with "Terrorist proof infrastructure"? Can totally distributed power generation by alternative energy sources like solar panels completely replace big power plants, thus creating a power network similar to Internet? What else can be done?

I have posted my thoughts about this on my blog here . I would love to see slashdot brainstorming on this one.

Thanks,

K
