Scientists used Herschelâ€(TM)s Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) on 22 June to look for warm molecular gas heated by newborn massive stars in the DR21 star-forming region in Cygnus. HIFI provided excellent data in two different observing modes, returning information on the composition of the region with unprecedented accuracy and resolution. Scientists observed ionised carbon, carbon monoxide, and water.

Sun released JavaFX 1.0 today, in a bid to take on Adobe's Flash and Microsoft's Silverlight technologies.

JavaFX, a technology by sun which will let developers write "rich internet applications" using a Java-esq language which has been in development for quite some time now has finally been released, joining rather late to the game. Also it requires it's own plugin which will be a hefty barrier to entry.

It is Sun's first Java release to include standardized, cross-platform audio and video playback code (in the form of On2 licensed codecs).

So, it will include Audio/Video support, and it is using codecs from On2. I don't think that this means the codecs are free in any sense of the term, just that Sun is paying the cost of licensing these codecs for the developers using JavaFX. Nevertheless, good codec support is always a good thing.

The lack of a Linux or Solaris release is a notable absence.

Kind of deflates the "standardized, cross-platform" claim...

The development kit currently consists of the base run-time, a NetBeans/Eclipse plug-in and a set of artifact exporters for Adobe CS 3&4."

So, the download they offer you includes the software to run the software you write, a plugin for eclipse and netbeans which are the two leading Java development environments, and some plugins for a few Adobe products to move stuff from them into the JavaFX world.

Submission + - Scientology Protests (clevelandleader.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The Cleveland Leader reports that the Internet group called "Anonymous" has kicked of it's day of global protests against the Church of Scientology. Protests have happened in several countries with 200 gathering in Australia, and up to 1000 gathered in London. Several more are planned in the United States and Canada. The group has called for protests to be non-violent, and so far no incidents have been reported. The incident that sparked the protests originated with the removal of a YouTube video of Tom Cruise talking about the "religion's" views on psychiatry and other subjects.

Submission + - Scientology Protests Planned Sunday 7

Anonymous writes: Around the world this Sunday, February 10th, there will be protests taking place at Scientology centers. The effort, started originally as a response to the DMCA-based removal of the Tom Cruise Propaganda Video, has grown to a surprising scale. After issuing a "declaration of war", anonymous, effectively a random collection of many different people online, has organized a day of protest on the 10th. Any and all are welcome to attend these protests — their goal is simply to educate the public on the practices of the "Church" of Scientology. Given Slashdots' History with Scientology, we hope you will join us in this. Read on for more details...

Since the sites being used to organize these events could probably not cope with the raw volume of Slashdot, I will outline the expectations and a few guidelines for these protests here. Also included below is a list of locations currently planned.

Protest Guidelines
  • This must be a non-violent, non-obtrusive protest. No loud chanting, no loud anything. Our goal is educating the public, and getting media attention on this issue.
  • Depending on local laws, cover your face in some fashion (Each location is doing something different). Scientologists have been noted at earlier rallies taking pictures of people and following them after the event. They WILL target you if you are not anonymous.
  • Be wary of other protesters. It is expected that Scientologists will be posing as anonymous to attempt to infiltrate the events. Distance yourself from any protester making a scene.
  • Bring your own flyers or signs. Again, check local laws about such things.
  • Be educated — see Operation Clambake for more information. Specifically good things to know about: Operation Snow White, Paulette Cooper, and Lisa McPherson for whom the date was chosen.
  • Be clear that we are not attacking the religion, or the free expression of it, but we are attacking the litigious and aggressive nature of the church and its leadership.
Locations
Each protest is expected to start at 11am local time, and generally run until 6pm, unless specifically stated. For the larger cities, expectations are running in the 100-300 people range, and smaller cities in the dozens. All of these locations have confirmed protests taking place. Please get on IRC — irc.partyvan.info, and find the appropriate channel for more information about your specific city. Start in the channels #irl, #xenu and #v or try your city or country name. For the larger cities, you can just show up — smaller cities, you should probably check on IRC first. I apologize for the vague copying of details for some of the non-english locations, since I had a hard time making sense of some languages.

Submission + - Mormons give Scientologists a run for their money. (sltrib.com)

An anonymous reader writes: There was a recent Slashdot story about the efforts of "Anonymous" to take down Scientology. Several responses to that story noted the similarity of Scientology with other religions/cults. Part of the followup discussion compared Scientology and the Mormon church. This story from the Salt Lake Tribune shows that Mormons will give Scientologists a run for their money in "controlling" their members. The Mormon church's university, BYU, has just kicked out the star hitter on the baseball team for missing sunday school. Other schools have suffered NCAA sanctions/suspensions for giving athletes special treatment. Prospective recruits take notice: athletes will get no special treatment at BYU, especially when it comes to church attendance!

Flamebait: This is something to remember when reviewing resumes from BYU grads. Ask yourself, "Did they graduate in technology or theology?" This story makes one wonder.

Submission + - Secret Scientology documents published (indymedia.org)

hansguckindieluft writes: de.indymedia.org reports:
The internet group Anonymous that recently declared war on Scientology has published documents and instruction videos (Link to the german newssite with downloads (in english)) reserved for high ranking Scientologists. This has reportedly been made possible by the hack of a scientology server a week ago.
Translated from german:
"The documents include handbooks for the highest OT-levels that normally require investments of hundreds of thousands of dollars into scientology"
"Furthermore CD's for selfindoctrination at 900$ a piece have been 'liberated'"
"Other 'hot stuff' are the OECs (Organization Executive Courses). That tell Org-leaders how to keep, acquire and financially exploit followers"

Other documents contained in the download bear titles like "All about radiation", "Child Dianetics", "The OT Levels" (800 pages), "The Axioms of Scientology" (6 pages), "Advanced Procedures and Axioms" (58p).

Teleportation — Fact and Fiction 348

jcatcw writes "Earlier this week actor Hayden Christensen, of Star Wars fame, and director Doug Liman discussed teleportation with MIT professors to compare the reality to the special effects version in the upcoming movie, Jumper. Edward Farhi, director of the Center for Theoretical Physics at MIT, said, 'It's a little less exotic than what you see in the movie. Teleportation has been done, moving a single proton over two miles. [But] teleporting a person? That is pretty far down the line. The quantum state of a living creature is pretty formidable. That is just not in the foreseeable future.'"

Submission + - 'Profane' Content On 700Mhz Band?

janitorj writes: "As I was reading the manual for my new cellular phone (yes I RTFM), I came across an FCC warning that reads "No person shall utter any obscene, indecent or profane language by means of radio communication." This just means I cannot legally curse during my phone calls, but then I started thinking about all the talk about the high stakes FCC auction for the 700Mhz band. If, as the hype suggests, a large broadband network is created on these frequencies, what will become of internet censorship? The FCC will potentially have jurisdiction over any data sent over its frequencies, so does that mean if this wireless network is created, there will be no more profanity allowed on the internet?"
