Check where your electricity comes from if it is natural gas or coal. You might not actually have a problem at all. Get an UPS for your PC and surge protection for every major appliance because I think it is more likely you will have rolling blackouts than actual total grid failure.

But there are truckloads of interesting fundamental research results that turn out to not have any useful application in practice because they are either not efficient enough, or cheap enough, or practical enough.
