Comment Re:Distaste of C++ (Score 1) 476

Totally agree. I've maintained a couple of C++ codebases in my time. It would take weeks to expand my C++ knowledge to where I could understand the favorite language patterns of the old maintainer.

Running old C++ code through Valgrind is hilarious. It's hard to believe how many things even experienced C++ coders get wrong.

Big companies tend to negotiate long payment periods. We're I work we don't pay anyone within 6 months. We also make it a point to dispute invoices.

Our suppliers have professional salesmen that make a living trying to rip us off.

That's the environment. Play the game- charge more for your next contract, keep trying to collect your invoice, and above all,stay on friendly terms.

Telco's are basically searching for a way to get a share of Google's profits. The plan was to introduce new subscriptions that would allow them to block Google. Unless Google agreed to pay them per search.

This wouldn't work if there was real competition. But there are just 3 telco's and they're all hurt by decreasing income form voice and sms.

This law will encourage telecoms to compete on bandwidth and network quality instead of financial trickery and monopoly abuse. Should be a good thing for consumers.

Halo 2 Online Preservation Effort Ends 201

A couple weeks ago, we discussed news that some dedicated Halo 2 fans were keeping the game's multiplayer alive after support for online play was dropped. Now, a few days shy of a month after support ended, the last users have been knocked off the server. "[A user named] Apache N4SIR outlasted everyone. 'May 11th @ 0158hrs I was FORCEFULLY REMOVED!!' he wrote on the forums at Bungie.net. 'I thought I'd be the one turning off the lights but that was done for me. Good night everyone, my Elite needs a rest.' His last comrade in arms, Agent Windex, was still signed on, as spotted by Kotaku at 4 p.m. US Pacific Time on May 10, but their adventure, which began on April 15, ended after Windex announced 21 minutes later that he had been removed from play and Apache N4SIR suffered a similar fate hours later, as he described in his post."

I think they were afraid if the company and I contacted each other (i.e. I interviewed) without an agreement in place for the recruiter, the company would somehow be able to duck their fee. Fees are usually between one and three month salaries, which is real money. In addition, they can negotiate a lower salary without a recruiter present. Recruiters are just doing their job. Don't call someone "self-serving" just because his interests are not aligned with yours.

Flash Builder 4 — Defective By Design? 66

ApolloX writes "Adobe has released its new version of the Flex Builder, now renamed Flash Builder 4. This version is radically different from previous versions of Flex, introducing the new Spark architecture and theme support. While I am pleased Adobe has finally added support for Eclipse 3.5, I am disappointed with some of the new architecture changes that make doing simple things, such as skinning a button, now quite cumbersome."

The idea of a programmer getting better in transitions is a fantasy. Programmers start out good or bad, and on average don't improve much. They move up the ladder by getting more knowledgeable about the organization; coding less, and talking more.

You sound like you moved past the coding long ago.
