Comment No longer the largest simulated exercise (Score 1) 71

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but I just simulated an attack of far greater proportions. First, I simulated having the resources to simulate an attack of far greater proportions, then I simulated executing my far greater attack. If anyone is interested, the results showed that while I was adequately prepared to defend against a simulation, I need to beef up some protocols and institute some new processes.

Apple Orders 10 Million Tablets? 221

Arvisp writes "According to a blog post by former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee, Apple plans to produce nearly 10 million tablets in the still-unannounced product's first year. If Lee's blog post is to be believed, Apple plans to sell nearly twice as many tablets as it did iPhones in the product's first year."

Monty Wants To Save MySQL 371

An anonymous reader writes "It seems as if the MySQL author is trying hard to win back control over MySQL. In his blog he calls upon the MySQL users to 'Help keep the Internet free' by signing his petition. He fears that if Oracle buys Sun they automatically get MySQL which would spell doom for the project. But I have have mixed feelings with this call for help, because after all — who sold MySQL in the first place?"

Comment Light pollution is fixable (Score 4, Insightful) 612

If we could start getting in the habit of focusing our lights down through the use of hoods and lamp covers we could probably make fast, cheap improvements on this problem. Light is wasted going up, with the exception of cool satellite shots showing the Earth at night. I for one would love to be able to see more than magnitude 1 and brighter stars from my rooftop in Brooklyn.

Comment Ultima Online? (Score 1) 209

We're going to have these shared spaces where 2D and 3D people can interact. All of this will come out in phases, with staged gameplay coming out. We're sort of blazing a path with this concept, and we're really interested in what this might mean for players of the two versions.

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't Ultima Online available in 2D and 3D clients?

Submission + - Doctoring Electronic Health Records

mynameismonkey writes: "openEHR guru Tim Cook discusses why Electronic Health Record developers should use open standards in a guest blog at A Scanner Brightly. Why are so few doctors using EHR systems? And, as more and more hospital EHR systems come online across the country, what do we have to fear from proprietary databases? It's one thing to find out your social security number was stolen. Now add your mental health and STD results."

Comment dangerous thinking and unwarranted IMHO (Score 1) 579

I don't find much credence to an argument that Europeans tend to have larger or more efficient brains than the rest of the peoples of the world due to interbreeding with Neanderthals, or due to any reason. Neanderthals have gotten a lot of press lately due to the fact that they seem to be "superior" to Homo sapiens in may ways - more muscular, stronger skeletal structure, larger brains.

The fact remains, however, that in the end, they lost the race, and that would point towards some sort of ultimate inferiority. Definitely kinda cool to think that as someone of Northern European decent, I may have ancestors that were not human as we tend to think of it, but these studies have to be done carefully and such claims as pertaining to differences in brain abilities should be made exceedingly hesitantly, especially in such early stages of discovery.
