I'm not at all surprised at how advanced Valve's VR offering is. They were actually working on VR long before the Oculus Rift started. For some reason Valve canned the project and let go of all their staff including Jeri Ellsworth. Many of these people were then snapped up by Oculus. Because Valve didn't sell their project to Oculus, Valve would have retained all their previous VR work to use when they restarted the project.

One reason why the Oculus Rift could be shittier than the Valve one is that Valve holds the IP to do something better and is not selling it to facebook.

If I am not mistaken, Valve did the ports for Left4dead, Portal 2 and HL2 to the Rift. Valve is definitely not a newcomer to the VR game.

I hope it is Valves VR that takes off. Valve only cares about gaming and doing it well. If facebook wins you can bet they will augment targeted ads into the VR.

I was gonna post the same thing. The article is pretty devoid of details and mentions nothing about tensile and compressive strength.

All it pretty much says is improved corrosion resistance and this short paragraph:

"David Lashmore, a professor of materials science at the University of New Hampshire who has conducted work in the area, says nano-engineered layers can make a material stronger by stopping cracks from moving through it."

So it sounds like it 'holds' the metal together from micro fractures but it says nothing about taking on the applied forces which would make it actually stronger.

Or from Steam, who forces patches on you that can completely change the product you purchased. Bought a GFWL game? It's now a Steam Edition game.

And that is horrible how? Instead of having to sign in twice to get into the game, you only have to sign in once. Some games are even worse like GTA where you have to sign into steam AND gfwl AND rockstar just to play single player. Having gfwl fuck off and die is a good thing for everyone. Blame microsoft for making GFWL so shit in the first place and then letting it die a slow death to try and drive pc gamers to the xbox. If it wasnt for the game turning into a steam edition, you wouldnt even be able to play that copy of the game you spent your hard earned dollars on anymore!

Why is it steams fault for a patch that changes the game into something else when, unless its a valve game, it is not valves responsibility for a poor patch. I can still remember when it was most common to get pc games on disc at the shops. You would take it home then find for yourself the latest patch. if they were incremental patches then you had to download and apply each one in turn and hope that the patching works right and doesnt fuck things up. At least with steam it takes care of sourcing patches for you so you can worry less about bugs in the game and playing the game instead. Auto patching also ensures everyone playing online is on the same version for multiplayer. If a patch changes your game into something else (and i know it does happen like with ns2) blame the developer for it. They are the ones that wrote the patch.

Or Origins... *giggles*

They're all just as bad as the other because no one is willing to put up the money to fight them.

Good thing they only have a few good games so if you boycott them youre not missing much when there are other great games around.

Yes, buy them from the likes of Microsoft who, after 9 years, changed their Xbox policy so that once you delete local content of a delisted game, you lose that content. They made no announcement, gave no notice of games being delisted, just changed their polices and screwed over their customers.

Well that company you were pissing on before (steam) lets you keep and download games you bought even after they have been removed from steam for whatever reason.

Because the xbox controller is the de facto standard controller in windows and on steam. And Linus knows that to get Linux onto everyones desktop one of the biggest shortcomings in Linux is mainstream commercial software and games. Steam OS (which cqan be installed over linux and not just standalone) sorta fixes that so it helps if the OS already has controller support.

What I am waiting for is when Linux has out of the box support for those $1 usb bluetooth modules. They are a bitch to get working and really needed when youre setting up Linux as a HTPC and you dont want a huge IR module hanging out of your pc.

In fact one of the reasons for microsoft making that abomination of an os windows 8 was because they thought apple was very close to coming out with a os with ios and osx combined together.

Combining osx and ios together would make a lot of sense for apple because osx lacks games while ios lacks serious programs for content creation. Putting the two together will give apple the perfect os for content consumption and content creation to better take on windows.

when you consider that valve will be coming out with a linux based os to play steam games and microsoft shutting down gfwl, there is getting less and less compelling reasons to own windows. Even programs like ms office and autocad can be found on osx.

Stop companies from redirecting us to the Australian store when we specifically put in the url for the overseas counterpart for example steam. If I want to buy from steam US without using a vpn (which is against steam policy if I used a vpn) then I should be able to instead of being forced back to the Australian site. Steam saying that I have to buy from the aussie steam store because some games are banned or censored does not hold water when it is only not illegal for an australian to buy rc goods overseas for personal consumption. Ok I did some digging and found this:

At the Game Developer's Conference (GDC 2013), Sony said, "PS4 Shader Language is very similar to HLSL, allows features BEYOND Direct X 11 and OpenGL 4.0"

Then some moron interpreted that as meaning Sony would use directx and extend its features but all it meant is Sony saying their shader language would be better than direct 11 and opengl 4.0.

There is some news on google about this but they are all from before the ps4 specs were officially announced. I'd say its false since the ps4 runs BSD and directx ran on nix we would have seen it a lot earlier on macs and linux games. As it is all mac and linux games use opengl and there is no reason to believe the ps4 will not be the same on joining the x86 crowd with nix.

I see what you are saying but its actually the other way around. In a LED light the LEDs has a longer lifespan than the controller. You can see this in a LED streetlight. The control circuitry is a simple plug in plugout to replace. The LED panel is modular too but thats more so the streetlight designer can specify how many LEDs for the lumens he needs.
