Win8 has a "refresh" option which will bring it back to initial speed without requiring a full format and reinstallation of all your crap.

Incedentally, I've had several macs, and still have one, and they do the same thing. Apple used to encourage people to reinstall OSX once a year to refresh it back to peak performance. Not sure where they stand on it now. I know my wife's macbook pro from two years ago runs like a relative dog now. Needs a wipe in a big way...

What I fear is that Valve will dive deep into Linux, and then suddenly realize that supporting software like steam and games on Linux may be a bit more challenging than they thought it would.

The myriad hardware types out there with myriad sets of less-than-optimal drivers might present myriad problems, even if Valve does master the video-card/opengl end of things. I know I get vastly different experiences with Ubuntu depending on if I install it on one desktop versus another versus my laptop. They all have their own sets of issues, and none of them are remotely perfect.

This whole affair with valve just reminds me of some computer user adopting a new platform with vim and vigor...and then realizing it's not all it's cracked up to be a few weeks or months later. I myself did this with mac, but it took a couple years for me to come to my senses, unfortunately.

There are MANY legitimate reasons why Linux on the desktop has not taken off. I fear that Valve just hasn't encountered the right set of those reasons yet.

I've found home in windows 8. Yes, the interface takes a couple days to get used to initially, but after that the thing is so mindbogglingly responsive that I wouldn't want anything else. I *really* like it.

I've been a big fan of Linux and Mac for many years, and have owned many of both types of PCs, and I can say that Windows 8 is just -really- good.

It's encouraging to see that MS is willing to see reason on this count. I happen to like Win8 quite a bit, and their initial "ban" on M rated content made me very nervous about the long term viability of the platform for me.

Or....wear a mask.

Except it's Maryland. If they get caught doing something like that, they'll be put away for life...

Completely untrue. Countless people have enjoyed, and do enjoy programming in PHP. I myself am one.

Yes, I recognize the language's many obvious (and many not-so-obvious) failings, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun using it. There are plenty of ways to write good PHP code (Zend standards/framework, for instance).

PHP's biggest problem aren't its (numerous) issues as a language. PHP's biggest problem are the 90%+ of the "PHP Programmers" who are abhorrently bad at programming in general, and think they're programmers simply because they wrote a little bit of HTML with embedded PHP, or installed Wordpress *shudder*.

Granted, I prefer Python to PHP any day of the week for both fun and function.... Never written any Ruby.

I also do enjoy the occasional double shot of espresso, straight up. I go to a Minuti coffee shop for those though. :-P

Chrome has been doing them since, like, forever. I think it's fantastic, personally. I dont want the browser to nag me when it's time to update. Just do it...
