Submission + - Windows Shares-- Fixing Permissions?

An anonymous reader writes: I was wondering what people are using to get a handle on Windows file share permissions. Figuring out what a given person or group has access to is a bit of a pain, and figuring out if anyone actually uses the data is also an exercise. Any suggestions?

Submission + - Hack DNS for lightning-fast Web browsing

jcatcw writes: Preston Gralla provides instructions on a simple way to get to Web sites faster by changing the way your PC uses the Domain Name System (DNS). He begins with OpenDNS, but also suggests editing the HOSTS file or adjusting DNS cache. In a companion piece, Fix your DNS problems, he recommends pinging sites to verify they are live when you have trouble reaching them through the browser. If the site is live, but you can't reach it, it might be because of an error in your HOSTS file or your OpenDNS configuration, an outdated item in DNS cache, or a problem at your ISP.

Submission + - Failing Muni WiFi in Madison?

patrickbunker writes: From WKOW in Madison, WI:

WiFi provider ResTech Services is cutting off service to all of it MadCity Broadband customers at the end of May. Restech states, from an initial 2,000 customers they are now down to 700. ResTech states most customers that canceled service complained of unreliable signals.

As a customer of ResTech since August 2006 I'm sure the reason most people canceled there service has nothing to do with the reliability of the signal. My 2nd story apartment is located just 12ft from a transmitter and is at eye-level. I can always get a reliable connection, the problem lies in there is never enough bandwidth for all customers. During winter and spring breaks at the University of Wisconsin, when lots of customers leave town the service works perfectly. At other times I can maybe pull up google after 10 attempts, but with a very strong connection signal. Sounds like this is more of a case of the provider not being able to afford a big enough pipe for customers. Is Muni-WiFi just not a good business plan?
