13-Year-Old Trades iPod For a Walkman For a Week Screenshot-sm 354

BBC Magazine convinced 13-year-old Scott Campbell to trade in his iPod for a Walkman for a week and see what he thought. Scott thinks the iPod wins when it comes to sound quality, color, weight, and the shuffle feature. The Walkman, however, offers two headphone sockets, making it much easier to listen to music with a friend. My favorite part of the review is, "It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equalizer, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette."

AMD Breaks 1GHz GPU Barrier With Radeon HD 4890 144

MojoKid writes "AMD announced today that they can lay claim to the world's first 1GHz graphics processor with their ATI Radeon HD 4890 GPU. There's been no formal announcement made about what partners will be selling the 1GHz variant, but AMD does note that Asus, Club 3D, Diamond Multimedia, Force3D, GECUBE, Gigabyte, HIS, MSI, Palit Multimedia, PowerColor, SAPPHIRE, XFX and others are all aligning to release higher performance cards." The new card, says AMD, delivers 1.6 TeraFLOPs of compute power.

Seeking Prior Art Before Filing Patent? 86

An anonymous reader asks: "I had a sort of out-there idea for computer hardware, and wanted to investigate design and manufacture. I figure the first step would be to patent the idea so that I am protected from it being stolen, while I confer with contractors about fabrication and circuit design. Does anyone know of ways to check for prior art, other than hitting up Google for something similar? I believe this idea is unique, but you never know what could have been out there, and I didn't know if there were any good resources on the web. Since the readership seems to be an inventive bunch, I think discussion on this topic may help more people than myself."

Journal Journal: What is with Zealots??

You know, I have been using linux for about 5 years now. Before that, I used a couple flavors of BSD, and Windows. I still use Windows on a day to day basis at work. My laptop runs XP, most of our desktops run a variety of 98, 2k, and XP, and our file servers run 2k. I have a firewall/router setup on OpenBSD, and a network monitoring machine that runs SlackWare.

Journal Journal: A rather boring day

Well, it looks like the SCO hub-bub has cut down for a day or so. Haven't seen any new stories anyway. Haven't done any posting today, but then again, I really don't do too much posting. I will through in my .02 every once in a while, but I am rather quite. I'm planning on restructuring my home network. I got this awesome p75 w/ 16m of ram today. It is going to make a rather sweet firewall. Yeah, I am going to put linux on it. I've been working on bringing the level of

Journal Journal: First Journal.

Yeah, I finally decided to write in my slashdot journal. I just wanted everyone else to see my nonsense ravings. I finally decided to write in my journal after my posts on the QT4 article. I just don't understand some opensource projects. "Oh, lets change the underlying api's but keep source compatibility, and lets do it on the release of every major version. Then during the minor versions, we'll break binary compatibility on every 4th release, just to keep the other projects guessing."
