Not to mention, the entire point of the AMD APUs (including the Jaguar-core ones the GP disparages) is that the GPU and CPU are the same damn chip, so they use the same damn memory. At this point, if it's slow then it's not even the fault of the hardware; it's the fault of the driver or API. If you're trying to get data from host to device using an APU and it's actually moving bits around, then you're doing it wrong.

No, he didn't get shouted down. And this doesn't say he was basically correct, either, it says ONE of his ideas was pretty good. If you go on an actual Atkins diet, expect your triglycerides to rise...which is not good, even if your weight goes down (which it is also likely to do).

FWIW, my doctor and the dietician she referred me to both said "Atkins is ok for the short term, I guess. But I'm not really happy with it, and don't stay on it for a long time." I think they were excessively chairitable towards him. Rising triglycerides is very not good, and I came off that diet "consistent with pre-diabetic", when before my only problem was weight.

OTOH, I still avoid refined carbohydrates, potatoes, etc. I'm hoping that the triglyceride levels will soon drop again.

Just the way it is. Particularly if you want something that can do native, no proxy editing of AVCHD which I presume you do from the "flash card" part.

Best economical solution is Sony's Vegas lineup. The basic Sony Movie Studio 13 can be had for $13. The Platinum version, which is probably worth the extra, can be had for $55. They'll ingest AVCHD and edit it native. Also can ingest lots of other common formats like WMV, MPEG 1/2, MP3, and image files. Very easy to use workflow.

Should you find you need more, you can upgrade to Vegas Pro, it takes the same files, just has more capabilities. Vegas Pro 13 Edit will run you around $300-400 and Sony does offer upgrade options from the Movie Studio version though you don't get a whole lot off.

Not saying don't try the free stuff, but you'll be sorely disappointed coming from a professional program. None of it is very good.

Don't tell me this doesn't have more to do with filesharing than "cyberattacks".

Most of the cyberattacks are state sponsored now anyway. Anything involving NATO and the internet is all about the new TISA "free trade" agreements. If Western governments want to stop cyberattacks, then maybe they should stop attacking their citizens in cyberspace. It's pretty hypocritical to rattle sabers regarding "cyberattacks" when your own intelligence services are eavesdropping on phones and distributing malware.

That's good advice. Do you happen to know if new cards like the 770 are backwards compatible with motherboards that don't have the latest PCI-e 3.0? My motherboard has PCI-e 2.0.

Oh, I guess I can go look it up. Thanks for the good advice.

Thanks for the advice, though. Right now, "Can I Run It" shows that most of the games that have published requirements will run on my machine. I'll save the dough and wait and see. It's not like I can't get a new video card in a day or two from Amazon or Newegg, if it turns out I need it.

It's free and pretty powerful.

It's only free if you're OK with 720p output, limited input, and not being able to move your source material to a different editor. The latter is actually the bigger risk because if Lightworks goes away (let's hope not) there'd be no way to buy the 'pro' version and get your data exported.

Otherwise it's $279 or you're on a subscription plan. It's probably still the best choice available, but be aware you don't just go buy a GoPro or a Nikon and plan on dazzling folks with the HD output with free Lightworks. From what I've seen, even iMovie parity on Linux costs $79/yr.

Even if you're very frugal and can use Free, it's probably smart to buy a month once in a while and export your projects.

Because Linux users are a pain in the ass.

You can find a bugzilla from about five years back where I had a problem with the built-in NIC on an ASUS mobo corrupting memory. Several others had the same problem on the same series of boards, and we were exchanging notes and working together on the bugzilla. Initially ASUS was helpful and looped in Atheros. But once we had a clear pattern (I mean a pattern of bit inversions in the hex dump), both went radio-silent.

I mean, what were they going to do, recall all the motherboards in that line just because they were no good? My time was worth more than the $90 for the mobo but we figured initially that its was a Linux driver bug and were trying to get to the bottom of it.

Anyway, had to rip it out and replace it (no slots left for another NIC in that application). Went to MSI ("oooh, jap caps") but those toasted (literally, burn marks on the mobo) quickly, found ASRock and haven't looked back.

I have an ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 in my cart at Amazon. Now don't you guys go buying them all before I put in the order on Friday. ;)
