Submission + - The Physics of a Rolling Rubber Band (sciencemag.org)

sciencehabit writes: Modern physics can get complicated. Sure, researchers know exactly what forces act on a ball rolling down an incline—an experiment that helped Galileo develop universal laws for movement and acceleration. But what happens when a deformable shape like a rubber band rolls around? A new study reveals that the faster it goes, the more squashed it gets. (Video included)

Comment Re:OpenGL and the rant about marketing (Score 2, Insightful) 515

This is not entirely true for a framework like OpenGL. You surely can add your own features or improve performance on your end, but these changes must be incorporated into graphics card drivers by vendors in order to have a wide audience. This is where it helps to have the industry clout that Microsoft does (not that this is necessarily a good thing, but they have the power to push through changes into hardware using their DirectX specs).

a3buster writes "This clock does not actually have a man inside, but a flatscreen that plays a 24-hour loop of this video by the artist watching his own clock somewhere and painstakingly erasing and re-writing each minute. This video was taken at Design Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach 2009."

Submission + - Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize (reuters.com) 3

AbbeyRoad writes: "OSLO (Reuters) — U.S. President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for giving the world "hope for a better future" and striving for nuclear disarmament. ... The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.""

Submission + - Barack Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

An anonymous reader writes: The Nobel Committee just announced that Barack Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize, winning against 200 or more other nominees. Since the award is usually given for a long distinguished career, or lifetime achievement, what do you think about the award being given to a 1st term US president, who has less than 1 year of experience in the job? What has he done so far to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? He is the commander in chief of the US military, presiding over two current wars (Iraq and Afganistan), one in which he is increasing deployment. Quite ironic don't you think that even the world is getting caught up in the hype?

Comment F1 key (Score 1) 939

Real men don't ask for help! But seriously, every a Windows pplication uses F1 as a shortcut key for opening up Help. I so rarely use Help that I really don't need a shortcut key for it. Worse, it's next to Esc, which I do use quite often to unselect active menus, etc. Accidentally hitting F1 in, e.g. Visual Studio, wastes a good few seconds as the bloated Help window loads.

AT&T Blocks Part of 4chan 342

holdenkarau writes "Several news sources (Mashable, The Inquistr, etc.) are reporting that AT&T is blocking img.4chan.org in the southern United States. That server is used for the infamous /b/ board (the home of anonymous). TechCrunch calls the decision to block 4chan 'stupid,' noting that they may have 'opened perhaps the most vindictive, messy can of worms.' The Inquisitr suggests that 'The global internet censorship debate landed in the home of the free.' moot (who runs 4chan) asks users to call AT&T, while some others suggest more drastic action (like cutting AT&T fiber)." Update: 07/27 09:23 GMT by T : Readers' comments below suggest that a) the purpose of the block was to curtail the effects of a serious DDoS attack and b) that the block has now been lifted, at least for some regions.
