To be fair, it worked at Microsoft for a long time as well. This system works well as long as there is certain upward mobility for all involved, specifically the stock price. When the Microsoft stock was doubling every few years, this reward system really did not ruffle much feathers as everyone still took part in the stock price rising. Sure, you may have not gotten as much stock as the "top performer", but you got enough that you really didn't think about it much.

This all changed once Microsoft stock started stagnating. This took all these safety nets away. Now, your performance review/rating took even GREATER effect as you were not getting rewarded for "free" with stock price rising. Now, you had to fight hand and tooth against your co-workers to make sure that you got yours.

THIS is why MS started tanking. The infighting that happened because rewards were true zero-sum game. If you win, someone else loses. It took all motivation to cooperate and build something together.

Yes, because we all know how the liability lawsuits in the 70's stopped corporations from polluting air and water... oh, wait, that NEVER happened! I think you have been watching too much Erin Brockavich. It is VERY DIFFICULT to pinpoint where your cancer came from. Your chances of proving definitely that specific source of pollution caused your cancer is almost nil, especially if pollution is common place.

Any artistic endeavor is going to have trouble with schedule and budget, because you are never quite sure where you are going to end up. You can make artistic compromises to bring in dates and lower budget, but the outcome is usually not worth the trouble.

Most of these studies are based on BMI which is not very reliable at all. It could be that people getting HEALTHIER are contributing to rise in BMI. If you work out regularly and have decent muscle mass, you will be considered "overweight" via BMI (even with 10% body fat). They really need to better define what overweight and obese is before pumping out more studies like this.

Submission + - Can a Creationist be a effective tech writer? (gawker.com) 2

SeattleGameboy writes: A well-known tech and culture writer for New York Times and Slate published and article where she announced that she is a Creationist. Do you believe someone who does not believe in science should/can cover tech subjects for magazines and newspapers? Hamilton Nolan at Gawker doesn't seem to believe this is a good idea. Isn't this something like CommanderTaco becoming a fashion editor at Vogue?
