Carbon Dioxide Emissions Fall Worldwide In 2009 221

Hugh Pickens writes "The Christian Science Monitor reports that the good news is that emissions from burning coal, oil, and natural gas fell 1.3 percent compared with emissions in 2008 primarily because of the global economic downturn and an increase in carbon-dioxide uptake by the oceans and by plants on land. One big factor was La Niña, a natural seesaw shift in climate that takes place across the tropical Pacific every three to seven years, where the climate is cooler and wetter over large regions of land in the tropics, encouraging plant growth in tropical forests. However the bad news is that even with the decrease in emissions the overall concentration of CO2 rose from 385 ppm in 2008 to 387 ppm in 2009, as concentrations continue to rise even as emissions slip because even at the reduced pace, humans are pumping CO2 into the atmosphere faster than natural processes can scrub the gas. Many countries have agreed in principle to try to stabilize emissions at 350 ppm by century's end, which would result in a 50 percent chance of holding the increase in global average temperatures to about 2 degrees C over pre-industrial levels."

Comment Is Blu-Ray even relevant anymore? (Score 2, Interesting) 420

I've not bought a DVD in years and have no interest to invest in Blu-Ray especially with the dust collecting on the movies I DID buy on DVD. The only way I'll have a Blu player is if it comes with my next Laptop (and I don't have a choice). The first words that came to mind when I saw this headline was "Who cares - how did this article get approved?" Good luck George, maybe do a Laser Disc release while you're at it.

Submission + - iPhone iOS4 '3G-gate'? (techreviews.net)

darkjohnson writes: Not sure why this particular story has not made a bigger sensation in the media as 'antenna-gate' — by all means it is way more valid of a problem that is going unattended by Apple (at least seemingly so from an outsiders standpoint).

Of all my friends who have the 3G and faithfully upgraded to iOS4, all have complained about how it has introduced performance issues that make the phone less usable than it was before the upgrade (to the OS that actually offered very little enhancements for the 3G).

You would think that Apple would at minimum instituted a roll back function for the phones and discontinued to allow 3G phones to upgrade. Not sure why there is anything delaying that this problem certainly isn't going to be resolved by giving away free phone cases.

They sure set it up. Ben tells Hurley he can do as he wants with the island, that people can come and go if he wishes. I see it being a darker version of Fantasy Island where Ben is the primary host for the guests (Mr. Roarke) and Hurley works behind the scenes to make the fantasy happen (Tattoo). Guests don't necessarily know the reason they're there. Story arcs would last more than one episode and not always offer happy endings. In the mean time, more mysteries of the island can be woven into the story, because there's no island hand book there are often many "Dude, look what I can do" moments between Hurley and Ben. Submission + - Lost Hours (blogspot.com)

darkjohnson writes: She lost her job, and had never seen an episode of Lost but always wanted to. She didn't want to start anywhere but at the beginning, so this 'Lost virgin' takes on the daunting task of watching every episode with the goal of being done before the series finale on Sunday. Luckily for her she started this quest with just (barely) enough time to do it, as of this writing she is reaching the midway point with 45 hours remaining to watch and 50 hours of time in which to do it.

Of course she had to blog about it! Will she make it? Tune in Sunday afternoon to find out.

Submission + - Does AT&T and Apple aid and abet iPhone thefts (apple.com)

Jamie Clay writes: "Have you ever had your iPhone stolen? Did you get excited by one of the 'little' upgrades coming with iPhone's OS3 — the ability to track and wipe clean a stolen iPhone? Well that feature requires a MobileMe account($99 annually). So, Apple is close to offering a theft deterrent (but they don't get the cigar). Maybe with enough feedback they'll tweak this feature a bit more to not only make the security option free but also disable a stolen iPhone. What they more or less offer here is $99 a year security insurance and if you use it, the thieves get a 'cleaned' iPhone that Apple and AT&T are happy to continue servicing — oh, and you have to pay full price for a new iPhone. Certainly can see why Apple wouldn't want to simply disable the stolen phones."

Trust? I trust a company to want to deliver value so their product continues. And when they fail to, the product fails (like Vista). Yes, I don't trust the big AV companies because they survive by consumer fear. Do I think they're perpetrating viruses? Well, let's just say I wouldn't be surprised if they were. I would rather think they're not, but if there was a slow down in attacks where would they be financially? All the 'trial' versions are, are ways to ease you into paying for something you wish you didn't have to pay for, no?

The cynic in me doesn't trust any of the big AV security companies. They have a clear motive to make sure their products are needed. An OS manufacturer on the other hand is motivated to produce a secure environment, and in this case where Apple has been hammering Microsoft about this issue, there is even more motivation. I'll certainly be giving this free offering a try. BTW- The rotten egg analogy was pretty lame.
