Comment Re:Sad (Score 1) 311

I've also just imported everything to diigo.com. I'm guessing a lot of people are doing that today because it took about 3 hours for everything to upload from my exported file (and still waiting on tags). So far I like it because I can choose "private" as the default setting.

Comment Re:I don't see much of Adobe products surviving. (Score 1) 520

There have been discussions in the design world of Apple having the ability to replace the Adobe Creative Suite if Adobe pissed them off enough. If Microsoft was actually dumb/evil/malicious enough to screw over every single graphic designer in the entire world, then I think Apple would totally steal that entire market share in short order. I'm a designer but hate working with Macs. We all think plenty about Adobe sucks, but their software is so much better than any other graphic design software available on the market they're still our heroes. But I would be come an Apple fangirl in a second if Microsoft tried to replace Adobe design software with their own stuff.

Sound As the New Illegal Narcotic? 561

ehrichweiss writes "The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics is warning parents and teachers of a new threat to our children: sounds. Apparently kids are now discovering binaural beats and using them to get 'physiological effects.' The report goes on with everyone suggesting that such aural experiences will act as a gateway to drug usage and even has one student claiming there are 'demons' involved. Anyone who has used one of those light/sound machines knows all about the effects that these sounds will give and to state that they will lead kids to do drugs is nonsense at best. It seems the trend in scaring the citizens with a made-up problem has gone to the next level."

Submission + - Attacking the oil spill the "down home" way (nwfdailynews.com)

artisteeternite writes: As BP, the federal government, and other counties use chemicals and all sorts of fancy equipment to attempt to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf, Walton County in the Florida panhandle is tackling it the "down home" way. They plan to use hay in the water to attract the oil (see fantastic video) before it hits their pretty white beaches; hoping to either collect it with boats, or roll it away from the beach with seaweed rakes. This defies instructions from the state of Florida and some say the hay used in Santa Barbara in the 60s didn't work. However, Walton County officials say the state hasn't given them a better solution, and the hay in Santa Barbara was used after it already was on the beaches.

The Sims 3 Racks Up Over 180,000 Downloads Prior To Release 187

Bloomberg reports that pirated versions of EA's The Sims 3 were downloaded over 180,000 times between May 18 and May 21. The game will not be officially released until June 2nd, and it does not make use of SecuROM for DRM. Quoting: "That outpaces the 400,000 downloads over three weeks for Electronic Arts' Spore, the most-pirated game of 2008. ... Copies of the game available on file-sharing Web sites aren't the full version, Electronic Arts said. 'The pirated version is a buggy, pre-final build of the game,' Holly Rockwood, a company spokeswoman, said in an e-mailed statement. 'It's not the full game. Half the world — an entire city — is missing from the pirated copy.'"
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Trade Secrets Revealed by FTC and MS Word (yahoo.com)

sonsonete writes: "The AP reports that the FTC filed improperly redacted court documents in the Whole Foods/Wild Oats case. Trade secrets were redacted by putting the black text on a black background.

Many of the details in the documents, which FTC lawyers filed electronically, were not meant to be released publicly, but words intended to be redacted were actually just electronically shaded black. The words could be searched, copied, pasted and read in versions downloaded from court computer servers.
The files were later replaced with scanned images."
