That's not necessarily true. In Central Europe, nationalism is alive and well (actually increasing due to the perceived cultural threat from the EU), and a picture with three different skin colors for three people will not be interpreted as affirmative action, but unwanted external cultural influence.

Particularly the black guy, as you don't expect to see black people every day.

In Hungary, at least, the original picture would cause outrage from the far-right and a measurable decrease in sales.

So, you're saying the Polish are racists and MS is just bowing to market forces?

You only have to look at the evening news with their "surveillance camera" footage to know that the ever-present camera does little to deter criminals. What we do get is a better record of the crime, which mostly just helps prosecutors convince the depicted offenders to agree to plea deals, as opposed to being used as a great bit of evidence to support a case to have them convicted and serve the prescribed time for the crime committed.

Same here. I've washed SD and CF cards more often than I'd like to admit. Despite that I've never had one fail out of the wash.

I've had one card fail though. My Palm Treo uses SD cards and once when removing the card my fingernail was in the perfect position to split the card open at the seam. When I removed the card from the phone I had 2 pieces. One plastic cover(the part w/o the label) and the remainder of the card stayed together. I re-attached to cover and attempted to read the card in several USB readers and the phone as well. It was dead. The devices never recognized that a card was inserted.

I'm sticking with iTunes.

I'm sticking with mp3 outlets. Why? I don't own an iPaidtoomuch errr..iPod. I own several mp3 players from small flash based devices (ipodShuffle like), cd and dvd based devices, smart phones, and in-dash mp3 players in the car. All of them work with mp3. None of them work with the files from itunes (except for the ones where you pay a non-iPod-tax for the mp3 version.)

Submission + - UK's Conservative Party Pro OSS

Paul Giannaros writes: "The UK's Conservative Party website top story states that 'an incoming Conservative government would create a level playing field for open source software in the UK', following the Conservative Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne's speech on recasting the political settlement for the digital age.
He talks about the importance of the 'equality of information' that the Internet has provided, social networks and their use in society, and open source, saying 'it is estimated that the Government could save at least 5% [£600m] of its annual IT bill if more open source software was used as part of a more effective procurement strategy'. He also briefly discusses 'the lack of open standards in government IT'."

Submission + - Congressman: colleges are nests of piracy

Prescott writes: Hollywood's congressman, Rep. Howard Berman of California, has announced that his subcomittee will be accelerating its hearings on piracy at American colleges. More troubling, he is getting ready to go after what he is calling the 'hypocrisy' of American colleges and Universities. 'Unfortunately, many schools have turned a blind eye to piracy,' Berman said. 'I don't doubt that there are legitimate issues that universities must grapple with, including privacy and cost concerns. However, when a university such as Purdue tells the AP that it rarely even notifies students accused by the RIAA because it is too much trouble to track down alleged offenders — such inaction is unacceptable.'
