Why cant these F'ing machines just keep a physical paper receipt that only the voter can see printing behind tamper proof glass? Each machine's receipt reals could be collected as an auditable record. The voter will know their vote counts. Win Win unless you

Submission + - An Open Letter to Mark Shuttleworth (tuxradar.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Many users are up in arms about a new feature in Ubuntu 9.04 that uses a pop-under window to nag users into installing patches even for non-critical updates. TuxRadar has summed up the general feeling in an open letter to Mark Shuttleworth, saying, "I don't think this will come as a huge surprise to you, Mark, but most people don't like their computer to be annoying. We understand the need to encourage people to install security updates, but getting on their nerves just doesn't seem like the smart solution. It doesn't seem like the Ubuntu solution." Without bugging users, how can Linux cope with end-user security as it grows in popularity?

Submission + - Windows 7 RC Crashes MSDN, TechNet Pages (computerworld.com) 1

CWmike writes: "Microsoft Developers Network (MSDN) and TechNet paid subscribers were supposed to find the 32- and 64-bit editions of Windows 7 RC available for download today. But in a snafu reminiscent of the problems Microsoft had in January when it tried to launch Windows 7 Beta, the download pages for the release candidate were inaccessible, despite numerous attempts over an hour-long span up until about noon Eastern. TechNet and MSDN subscribers were not happy. 'Man, this stinks,' said a user identified as Lyle Pratt, on a TechNet message forum at 10 a.m. ET. 'I can't believe we can still bring MSDN to its knees!' said John Butler, a Microsoft partner. 'Surely, they should be able to deal with this? Not a good advert for Microsoft.' The Windows 7 RC is slated to be available for public download next Tuesday, May 5. Meanwhile, Microsoft said today that the RC would operate until June 2010, for 13 months of free use — a significantly longer time than it did with Vista's previews."

Comment I have had the exact same experience. (Score 5, Funny) 481

I have had the exact same experience with my hotmail account a few years ago. I would get almost no spam. This was great for years with that account. Then one day I got a few spam. I tried the "opt out" option and almost moments later I saw multiple spams coming in. I have not tried it with my gmail or any other account for fear that my spam will double.

Submission + - 10 PC Games That Won't Die (extremetech.com) 1

ThinSkin writes: "Some games just live on...and on...and on.... That said, Joel Durham Jr. at ExtremeTech has listed 10 of these games that just won't die. Rather than just list popular titles of yesteryear, Joel goes a step further and tests these games to ensure that they work on Vista (and in some cases Windows 7) so that gamers can stay happy even after migrating to a new operating system. Some titles include Diablo II, MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, and Warcraft III. Strangely, CounterStrke is absent from the list, and perhaps World of Warcraft is still relatively new to be included."
