Submission + - Exercise in pill! (usatoday.com)

Coldeagle writes: This has got to be the ultimate helping factor for the modern geek that doesn't have time to hit the gym. A group of scientists have created a pill that stimulates muscles into removing sugar from the blood:

"Sedentary mice that took the drug for four weeks burned more calories and had less fat than untreated mice. And when tested on a treadmill, they could run about 44% farther and 23% longer than untreated mice."

So not only do we loose weight while doing nothing, but we become able to further and longer! I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to the transition from mousey to human!

Submission + - Chemical Radiation sheild (usatoday.com)

Coldeagle writes: Scientists have discovered a way to allow the body to block radiation damage to cells. This new technique actually mimics a tumors behavior in the way that it bypasses the bodies normal defense against bad genes:

"Learning that was the 'eureka' moment, Gudkov said. Apoptosis is the body's way of stopping defective cells, with damaged genes, from spreading. Tumors grow because cancer cells block apoptosis in various ways, including by activating a normally dormant cell-signaling pathway called "nuclear factor-KappaB" or NFKB.

Gudkov's team decided to try activating that same pathway in healthy tissue, to see if it could keep radiation-blasted cells from triggering their suicide program.

'We imitated a tumor trick,' is how Gudkov puts it.

The team knew that flagellin, a protein from normal gut bacteria, can wake up NFKB. So they created a drug based on that natural protein."

If this is successful, not only could we have better radiation protection from Chemotherapy and nuclear fall out, but for our astronauts!

Submission + - Where are the gaming laptops with Pointing sticks?

Coldeagle writes: Hey folks, I'm one of those from the old school pointer stick (or keyboard nipples to us old school guys) laptops, and I love them! My old Dell XPS Gen 1 is dying, and I need a new gaming laptop. I've been looking around, and I can't find any new laptops with a pointer stick that have decent Graphics! The best that I've so far is the Lenovo ThinkPad T-61 which has the NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (256MB Open GL) graphics card which only has so-so reviews. Does anyone have an explanation for exactly why the pointing stick's have been phased out? Or can anyone advise me of a decent gaming laptop that has the pointing stick? I mean seriously, do you want your hands to leave the keyboard while gaming? They're great for games like WoW where you have to constantly type while moving around.

Submission + - Cloned animals deemed ediable by FDA

Coldeagle writes: According to USA today, we could be having some good 'ol cloned beef, goat, and pork (well their offspring)!

"Meat and milk from cloned animals is as safe as that from their counterparts bred the old-fashioned way, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday.

The decision removes the last U.S. regulatory hurdle to marketing products from cloned cows, pigs and goats, and puts the FDA in concert with recent safety assessments from European food regulators and several other nations."

This begs the question...instead of where's the beef...what's the beef?
