I priced out a backup propane generator as a backup for my home that cost about the same thing. Never went with it. This could provide a home with good backup power in case of outage. (keep the sump pump or the furnace going anyway)

This is so true, we have tonnes of them. I would say HP and DELL both sell a heck of a lot of notebooks and servers.
That's one way to look at it I guess. He could just have easily boosted his salary and cut staff. He didn't do that. Let's hear from the employees before we make judgment. Sure there is a good dose of PR in there, but if staff are getting raises and he is motivating them that will improve the company, and that is good business.

Exactly. Buy yourself a couple of 2 or 3 TB usb's. Encrypt them with Truecrypt and backup all your data to both. Now store one offsite. Update your backups (rsync for Linux or robocopy for Windows). Now swap your offsite with the one you had onsite that you updated. Keep doing this.
I am just not a cloud type of guy. I know some people prefer that but it makes no sense to me when it is so easy, cheap, fast and most importantly, secure.

Not picking on you specifically, just answering a chorus of boos from the peanut gallery. People have lost their love of how stuff works. Who cares if you can't use it as the real thing. I can think of no better way to learn about transmissions than what this guy had done. And all the negative posters on Slashdot just shrug and criticize. You do this stuff because __you can__, end of story, no other reason needed. From the interest he has received I am thankful others still get joy from doing stuff for purely learning and discovery purposes. They are the ones that go on to invent cool things. The rest drool over their shiny new sealed smartphones and tablets.
I knew, I just knew that after reading the summary and it contained the word 'gun' that the whole first thread would be another useless gun debate with "second amendment" being brought up and people questioning each others parentage.
