LSD Alleviates 'Suicide Headaches' 272

sciencehabit writes "Patients suffering from the agony of cluster headaches will take anything to dull the pain, even LSD, it turns out. Results from a pilot study reveal that six patients treated with 2-bromo-LSD, a nonhallucinogenic analog of LSD, showed a significant reduction in cluster headaches per day; some were free of the attacks for weeks or months. And some of these patients are still reporting significant relief more than a year after they were treated with the compound." I'm told, by people with reason to know, that the hallucinogenic variety has the same effect on cluster headaches.

Look at your provincial / state governments privacy acts. There are instances where this type of violation of privacy rights are statutory torts (legislation). If you're lucky, your province / state may not even require you to prove damages to file an action for violation of privacy. If you don't have that type of protection, I'm sure that there's a waiver of liability from BestBuy in your contract.

Unless you're lucky and happen to live in a jurisdiction like Quebec, which has anti-SLAP ("baillon", or "Strategic Lawsuit Against Participation") legislation in place, you have no little or no recourse. In Quebec you could ask for 10 grand of lawyers fees up front from the corporation and you could ask to have to court throw out the defamation lawsuit prior to it going to court.

Comment I downloaded MoS cd's and it brough them business. (Score 1) 240

If I hadn't downloaded Ministry of Sound cd's off torrent sites, I never would have heard about the club. Last time I was in London I, and several friends, each dropped the 15£ cover and another 100£ or so each on drinks. I only went to the club because of the pirated music. I would go again next time I'm in town.

Bing Cashback Can Cost You Money 333

paltemalte writes "Microsoft and various retailers have teamed up to bring you cashback on purchases made via Bing's price comparison feature. There is a little snag, though — it seems that when you have a Bing cookie living in your browser, some retailers will quote you a higher price than if you come with no Bing cookie in your system."

COBOL Turning 50, Still Important 314

Death Metal writes with this excerpt from a story about COBOL's influence as it approaches 50 years in existence: "According to David Stephenson, the UK manager for the software provider Micro Focus, 'some 70% to 80% of UK plc business transactions are still based on COBOL.' ... Mike Gilpin, from the market research company Forrester, says that the company's most recent related survey found that 32% of enterprises say they still use COBOL for development or maintenance. ... A lot of this maintenance and development takes place on IBM products. The company's software group director of product delivery and strategy, Charles Chu, says that he doesn't think 'legacy' is pejorative. 'Business constantly evolves,' he adds, 'but there are 250bn lines of COBOL code working well worldwide. Why would companies replace systems that are working well?'"
