Submission + - Israel toLaunch AntiHijack ID System for Aircrafts (techluver.com)

Tech.Luver writes: "Israeli authorities plan to issue a new anti-hijack identification system to incoming aircraft which they say is foolproof, but some experts are not convinced it will plug all the security holes on the horizon. Starting next year, Israel will require pilots who fly to its airports to use the Security Code System (SCS), a local invention designed to ensure planes that have been commandeered for al-Qaeda-style attacks are spotted in time. Israel plans a trial run for the system, using a credit card-sized keypad, next month, in cooperation with five airlines from the United States, Europe and Africa. Pilots who fail the authentication test when they approach Israeli airspace will be denied entry. Should a plane go ahead, ignoring further warnings, Israel will consider it hostile and scramble fighter planes for an interception. Submission + - iPhone available on all networks in Germany

teslar writes: The Spiegel tells us (in German), that as a result of Vodafone's court order, T-Mobile is now selling the iPhone unlocked and without a contract at a bargain price of 999 Euros — 600 Euros more than it costs on contract. People who have bought their iPhone on or after the 19th of November can have it be unlocked for free. However, the deal is only temporary until the legal situation is clear — T-Mobile is appealing the decision and is threatening to sue Vodafone for damages.

Submission + - Genetically engineered mouse is not scared of cats

Gary writes: "A team from the University of Tokyo have genetically engineered a mouse that does not fear cats. By tweaking genes to disable certain functions of the olfactory bulb (the area of the brain that receives information about smells directly from olfactory receptors in the nose) the researchers were able to create a "fearless" mouse that does not try to flee when it smells cats, foxes and other predators."

Submission + - Sony Films Won't Play on Sony DVD Players

taxevader writes: Sony Films Won't Play on Sony DVD Players, Say Reports
Complaints have begun appearing on some tech websites that copyright-protection coding on new releases from Sony, including Stranger Than Fiction, The Holiday, Casino Royale, and The Pursuit of Happyness, has made them unplayable on certain DVD players. One person complained on an Amazon.com discussion board that when inserted in Sony's DVP-CX995V player, the disks "load up to the splash title screen and then load no further, then after about 60 secs the player turns itself off!" The writer said that when he contacted Sony he was told that the company was aware of the problem and that it was working on a firmware update. The writer then asked Sony, "Would it not be a good idea to test changes you intend to make on your DVDs at least on your own equipment so that if you find a problem you could have the firmware update available instead of not only inconveniencing, but alienating your own customers?"

Submission + - AACS cracked, again

EmTeedee writes: From a blog post on DLTV:

This time the target was the Xbox 360 HD DVD add on. Geremia on Doom9 forums has started a thread on how he has obtained the Volume ID without AACS authentication. With the aid of others like Arnezami they have managed to patch the Xbox 360 HD DVD add on.
and later in the same article:

It appears that XT5 has released a application that allows the Volume ID to be read without the need to rewrite the firmware. This would mean that anyone could simply plug in the HD DVD drive and obtain the Volume ID from any HD DVD without the hassle of flashing it.

Submission + - Xbox 360 HD DVD Hacked even for Revoked licences

Umuri writes: As mentioned in an article at engadget, the XBox 360 player has been compromised and now can play HD DVDs without authenticating with AACS, allowing even revoked licenses to be played. Backup your movies, format shift them, whatever. Defective by design doesn't even quite cover the failure of the model, or the success of the groups who made this possible.

Submission + - Google dropped Talk.Orgins because of hacking

alek writes: "Yesterday, /. discussed "Google De-indexes Talk.Origins, Won't Say Why" with various tin-foil hat theories advanced. Today, Matt Cutts from the Google anti-spam team posted "How Google Handles Hacked Sites" and provides a blow-by-blow of what actually happened. In summary, Talk.Orgins was hacked, with hidden Javascript inserted to link to rape and animal sex web sites. Google's algorithms flagged this nefarious behavior as spam and did indeed de-index the site. They also flagged it in the WebMaster Console so the site owner would see this, plus even sent them Email that something was amiss — indications are they knew before the site owner did! Talk.Orgins has fixed the problem and Matt confirms that their re-inclusion request has been approved. While Google has a reputation for being non-communicative, they didn't do too shabby here IMHO."
