Submission + - Senator Robert Stafford dead at age 93

purduephotog writes: "CNN Writes: Former Vermont Sen. Robert Stafford, a staunch environmentalist and champion of education whose name is familiar to countless college students through a loan program named for him, died Saturday. He was 93.

In 1988, Congress saluted his dedication to education measures, renaming the Federal Guaranteed Student Loan program the Robert T. Stafford Student Loan program. The low-interest loans are now known almost universally as Stafford loans to the millions who qualify for them each year.

Many of us owe our college experience to the loans granted in his name- I know I would not have been able to finance my college without it."
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Kazakhstan to build world's biggest tent.

John G. the 4th writes: Astana, Kazakhstan is going to host the world's largest tent in an effort to make a year long bubble of summer in the heart of the Kazakhstan capitol. The tent will be made of a material that will absorb sunlight so that its inhabitants will be able to experience a summer-like atmosphere even when its -30 degrees celsius outside.

The tent itself will stand some 150 meters high, and is expected to be as big as several football stadiums.

From the article:

Underneath, in an area larger than 10 football stadiums, will be a city with squares and cobbled streets, canals, shopping centres and golf courses. The idea is to recreate summer, so that when the outside temperature is -30C, the residents of the Kazakh capital can play outdoor tennis, take boat rides or sip coffee on the pavement cafes.
