R$ 5000 is about TWICE what a top software engineer is paid in a month.

Bullshit. I used to earn about R$4k/month (after taxes) back in 2003-2004 working as an IT infrastructure manager. I had software engineer peers on the same salary level. This was in Rio; you could probably make 30-50% more in Sao Paulo.

Remus Project Brings Transparent High Availability To Xen 137

An anonymous reader writes "The Remus project has just been incorporated into the Xen hypervisor. Developed at the University of British Columbia, Remus provides a thin layer that continuously replicates a running virtual machine onto a second physical host. Remus requires no modifications to the OS or applications within the protected VM: on failure, Remus activates the replica on the second host, and the VM simply picks up where the original system died. Open TCP connections remain intact, and applications continue to run unaware of the failure. It's pretty fun to yank the plug out on your web server and see everything continue to tick along. This sort of HA has traditionally required either really expensive hardware, or very complex and invasive modifications to applications and OSes."

Comment Had to cancel my LinkedIn account (Score 1) 474

I was getting 2-3 calls a week from HR agents and everyone I asked where they got my contact details said: jeez, uh, I guess LinkedIn.

Mind you, my phone wasn't listed there. They would look-up the company name, call the main number and get the receptionist to find me

I couldn't find where to restrict my details the way I wanted so I cancelled my account. Haven't got a single call ever since.

Comment Steam won't run without admin privileges (Score 5, Interesting) 420

But Valve will go after you for trying.

My question:

I am not willing to play (and let other people play) HL2 using the Admin account on my computer because of the obvious security implications (I don't want my computer infested with malware).

Is there any way to run it without admin privileges? I installed it using admin privileges and went back to my unprivileged account but turns out it needs to write data to the install folder (bad programmer - no donut for you).

Which are the files STEAM tries to write to in the install folder?

If it turns out to be too complicated I'll just download the no-steam version with BitTorrent ;-).

Thiago, It cannot be run without admin privileges. I know you were probably joking, but I would also encourage you to avoid any product that claims to get around Steam. We take cheating and hacking very seriously.

Submission + - Tracking Your Fingers with the Wiimote

XCondE writes: Using an LED array and some reflective tape, you can use the infrared camera in the Wii remote to track objects, like your fingers, in 2D space. This lets you interact with your computer simply by waving your hands in the air similar to the interaction seen in the movie "Minority Report". The Wiimote can track upto 4 points simultaneously. The multipoint grid software is a custom C# DirectX program.
