Comment Not very long baseline interferometry (Score 2, Informative) 149

Just a minor correction. the scientists did use interferometry but it was not "very long baseline interferometry". The "very long" term applies to the telescopes being separated by extreme distances, say over the entire United States as is the case of the VLBA. Also, the VLBA can only function in radio wavelengths because the data can be taken at the individual telescopes an recombined later. With near-infrared interferometry, what the authors of this study were using, requires that the light from each telescope be sent down an optical tube with mirrors and recombined at a central location which constrains the IOTA telescopes to be close together.

IOTA was dismantled a few years ago, geiven that a new optical/near-infrared interferometry was coming online, CHARA http://www.chara.gsu.edu/CHARA/

The new set of rules will force applicants to provide the application along with photocopies of both the user's ID and business licence. Each of the applications would then be reviewed by an official.

It's all part of the patent game that corporations play today. Patent trolls can shake down small companies, but not the big ones.

Most of the weapons at Ben Gurion airport are concealed, worn by very attractive officers as it happens. Sexy and deadly.

I saw plenty more German Shepherds and machine guns on display at Heathrow and Frankfurt airports, where the security was nowhere near as good when it all comes down to it. All show and no go.

Submission + - Banks Harvesting Social Media Data? (avg.com) 1

HangingChad writes: Roger Thompson describes on his blog, also reported here, an experience that may point to banks and credit card companies aggregating data from social media sites. Before the corporate apologists step up with their usual "if you don't want to make it public don't post it" line, think about that for a second. And ask what's next? Are they going to start reading your email? Logging your cell phone calls? Is social media a public web site, or a convenient way to keep in touch with family and friends and where do we draw the line on corporate data aggregation? I'm thinking right here might be a good place.

wow. I own a software company and we have a mixed use cube area as well. If anyone tried to remove music from our team I would remove them from the company. It's been a while since I developed but I certainly did my best work listening to music, even when it wasn't to drown out others. It's impossible for developers to operate in a distracting environment - the minute a person nearby is on the phone, they are pooched without some way to muffle sound. We tried earmuffs even for some sensitive folks, but music was the solution.

Submission + - SPAM: Rogue antivirus lurks behind Google Doodle search

alphadogg writes: In Esperanto the word is "malica." It means malicious and it's the best way of describing many of the search results Google visitors got Tuesday when the clicked on Google's front-page Doodle sketch, dedicated to Esperanto's creator. It's the latest example of just how good scammers have become at manipulating Google search results. For months now, they've followed Google's Trending Topics section and then used search engine optimization techniques to push hacked Web pages up to the top of Google's search results, security experts say. They do this by flooding hacked pages with keywords that are then recorded by Google's search engine.

Here is a round up of the most popular videos that were watched throughout 2009. Obviously Michael Jackson was one of the top artists, but strangely his whole career of pop superstardom was dwarved by Susan Boyle! Who’d a thunk that Britain’s Got Talent would produce more hits than the death of the King of Pop? Obama was big on the list and so was Miley Cyrus. This case gives us a great window into what a world without copyright protection would look like: everyone ripping off everyone else's code. There got to be a compromise that works for both the GPL and the RIAA, so end users (us) win.

Plus it's ironic that Microsoft, the "king" of software development is having all those problems with subcontractors writing code for them.
