No offense bro, i'm definitely not 'for' android replacing a desktop OS, but yes, it can do all those things and more. The latest versions of android on most premium smartphones come with an office clone that reads and writes various office file formats. There are bazillions of apps out there for reading and writing PDF files, etc. In addition, as far as printers...remember. Android is Linux. Printer vendors for the most part keep their printers Linux compatible. I can even write Ruby/Ruby on Rails code if i choose to do so on an android based device.

No, the real issue with Android? It's designed for a touch based device. Production level PCs are currently mouse and keyboard based devices. It will be very hard for any company to change that. Instead, if an OS vendor wants to succeed, they need to cater to that market.

Oh and to anyone claiming that microsoft is catering to that market, they aren't, and they've admitted as such, and are working to remedy that in the next major Windows release, due out in 2015.

It's not about what's best for you, it never has been. it's about what's best for our energy grid. A single 100 watt incandescent is equivalent to 7 CFL bulbs. This leads to massive energy savings. Sure the bulbs are flawed, but the flaws have been/are being worked out as time goes on.

Here in America, most 'bulk food' items cost just as much as buying a weekly supply on sale at the local grocery store, so there is no need to buy in bulk. My biggest problem with CFLs is they die...fast. We don't follow common usage patterns with CFLs. They are subject to extreme temperature changes, and occasionally run 24/7. Incandescent bulbs have treated us well. That being said, we've switched over to CFLs for the most part. Only outside lighting is still incandescent.

Oh I dare say it's far worse then that. Google might go so far as to grab images only when you open emails, but this opens up the possibility of using google to DoS a target. Think: Now merely sending an email out to millions will have google request those images millions of times, potentially drowning the unsuspecting site with requests.

Heh...i'll take this a step further (just for the hell of it.) In America, if the CIA, FBI, Army, Navy, etc. blows you to bits, your family sues the government for billions. Illegal immigrants have no similar protections and anyone else is a gray area. Compare that to china, if you look at the chinese miliary the wrong way, you are probably going to die.

p.s. even thought this, and the above comment, will be modded down...I'm just going to throw this out there. Linux ignoring, or trying to be like in some cases, windows and/or os-x isn't going to work. As a power user, developer, and gamer, i want to get useful stuff done. I don't want to tweak config files, i don't want to mess with sorry ass UIs (*cough* gimp, open office, libre office) and i don't want a shitty ass GUI (ubuntu, fedora / anything gnome 3.x based. Now, i don't care what you try to target, just please know that you won't have me, or others like me, using your OS or apps. I use windows 7 and office at work, os-x/office at home, and i'm pretty happy, even though i don't *want* to use either OS or an office suite owned by MS.

It's not the document format. It actually IS the UI. Office 2010 was fucking amazing. I'll say that as a windows, linux (ubuntu, fedora, and zorin os user). It's all about the ribbon yo. If you want linux on the desktop you have to copy that ribbon mentality. if you don't...welll continue listening to the anti microsoft crowd. BTW, the sidebar in OO and LO sucks, just like Windows 8.
