GNU is Not Unix

Journal Journal: GnuBonzi

Considering the popularity I hear about Bonzi Buddy, I think someone should take the time and effort to make a spyware-free, open source version.

I lack the skill to make such a thing, but I would be willing to help draw the avatar.

Mozilla

Journal Journal: How I shot myself in the foot with Mozilla

I recently removed my old mozilla installation to replace it with firefox. And foolishly, I removed it with a number of rm's.

I just barely reinstalled psm, but still I have no ssl and no ability to use https. I nearly drove myself insane trying to do the psm stuff, since putting the libraries in place was not enough, I also needed to get chrome to recognize them.

What other libraries do I need to get ssl and https support?

I use debian, so possibly the right apt-get might solve this. Maybe.

I hope I can solve this soon, since both my bank and stockbroker use https, and I'm rather inconvinienced until i fix it.

Linux Business

Journal Journal: Ars Economicas 2

Okay, this is going to be tricky.
Apparently the slump is over, and it's possible to get jobs now. I need one: I did not have any paid employment during 2003, and supported myself collecting aluminum cans.

Now once I'm done laughing at the amature video game made about this unusual livelihood, I have realized that I need paying work.

I'm a computer geek with a half-finished degree in computer science. I use a lot of linux, and family members tell me I would make a great teacher. I could get an accountant's certificate in 3 months, or a nursing certificate in 3 months. It will take 2 years to finish my degree (at least. The college keeps changing the requirements.)

I am applying to the following companies: McDonalds, Borders Books, Wal Mart, and the Hobby Lobby.

I live near Houston, Texas. Places for me to work will have to be within 100 miles of there.

What company would be most interested in hiring someone of my specifications? And why have most companies been ignoring my resume?

Music

Journal Journal: Artists only fooling themselves

I've been thinking recently about how music artists and companies are complaining that if they sell music on a per song basis (like in Apple's iTunes Music Store), it will ruin their industry and destroy the artistic value of an album. But hasn't the CD already made listening to one track off an album and skipping the rest incredibly easy? I know tons of people that have bought an album for one or two songs and just skip all the rest. I've done this myself many times. I've also bought albums for one song and ended up liking the whole album. I think selling music by the track raises the bar for artists and producers. If they want the album to survive, they will have to create great albums and not just hope that people will buy it off the strength of one song... because they won't.
Mozilla

Journal Journal: Firebird

I was just thinking about my Windows web browser of choice. It's Mozilla Firebird. Even though it is beta (or maybe even alpha) I think it serves me very well. I'm not in the habit of using Windows very much, but I do have a bunch of Windows games that I enjoy playing so when I'm on the computer I sometimes do a bit of lite surfing. So if you're looking for a good browser for Windows or Linux, I highly recommend it. And if you're looking for a good Mac browser, I suggest Camino if you're just looking for one browser or Safari if you're looking fo a fast browser for lite surfing.

Journal Journal: More comments on the OS 9 vs OS X debate

I pulled out my old PowerMac 5400 the other day to see if it still worked and to attempt to install System 7 on it. I did not succeed with the System 7 installation, but it already has OS 9, so that is okay. I decided to play around with OS 9 and I have to say that I am still not convinced that OS 9 has a better interface than OS X. Sure the vintage rainbow apple up in the corner is cool, but I see no other reason why the interface is so great. I think the main reason people think that OS 9 is better than OS X is because that is the interface they are used to. I prefer OS X because that is what I am most familiar with, but if I used OS 9 for a while, I'd probably grow to like some of its features.

So now I will get to my point. All of you OS 9 users out there should give OS X a try.. and I mean a real try. For a month use nothing but OS X. At the end of that month you might still prefer OS 9, but I bet you will gain a new perspective on OS X and will probably miss some of its features when you return to OS 9. There is no denying that OS X is the future of Apple computers and I don't want all of you to be left behind.
OS X

Journal Journal: Stop the whining (a bitch about whining) 2

In reference to this article on Low End Mac, I'd like to say to everyone, STOP YOUR WHINING about OS X! First of all, the author claims that he is an IT consultant and that he recommends that people stay with MacOS 9. If I was paying this guy, I'd demand my consulting fee be refunded. This is like a Windows consultant recommending someone go with Windows ME instead of XP. And instead of backing up this recommendation with some major problem he has discovered in OS X, he commences to whining about minor user interface issues and other problems that aren't really porblems at all. I'll let you read the article for yourself to find out what an idiot this guy is. My main point here is that the Mac community needs to realize that OS 9 is DEAD! And it's not coming back! So I recommend that if you like Macs and want to continue to use them in the future, you should learn OS X now and be done with it. New Macs will not even boot into OS 9 and anyone who tells you to stick with OS 9 has absolutely no interest in your future, they are only considering their own self interests and hatred for OS X.

Journal Journal: Shameless hype or the Next Big Thing?

Is anyone else excited about the new PowerPC G5 computers? I sure am and I don't even intend to buy one (at least not anytime soon). But until these things hit the real world, it's all just shameless hype and speculation. I think Apple produces a great OS and some great hardware, and I think they should see their marketshare grow, especially when software begins to get optimized for the new G5. To do this they will have to cut costs AND prices, much like Dell. I think they should set some agressive goals for themselves. A ten percent marketshare would be nice for them in the consumer market and they should also be aiming for a similar marketshare in servers/storage. So good luck to Apple, I hope they have great success.
Hardware

Journal Journal: More comments on comments

Here is a reply to one of my comments. I think the person who wrote it should look up irony in the dictionary. It isn't ironic that I mentioned the fact that Dell is about to go floppyless. In fact I thought it was a good tie-in to the original topic of the iMac and it was also a little jab at Dell and other PC manufacturers for being so far behind the curve. Okay, in that respect maybe it is a bit ironic... don't ya think?

Journal Journal: Finally, I see why meta-moderating is good

I recently wrote a comment that was critical of the general Slashdot consensous. If you read the article and then read the comments that are highly rated, then you should see that my comment is valid and relavent. However, someone moderated my comment down and listed it as Offtopic. I believe that this moderation was in error and probably given out by someone who was one of the hypocrites in question. It irked me when I read the article and saw that the comments were basically saying that the people who tried to steal the cable were so wrong. The commenters were so righteous and justified in their proclamations. Of course these are the same people who think it is okay to download music and software without paying for it as they should. I am making a broad generalization there, but the point is that the two things are the same thing, you are stealing something. I think that people who are making these comments should make sure that all of their software is properly licensed and all of their music is not illegally downloaded before they get on their high horse.

Journal Journal: Yet Another Journal Entry (YAJE)

I've discovered over the past few months that when I am typing some code (or whatever), it makes things really fast and easy if I type the opening parenthesis and the closing parathensis one right after the other, then arrow into the middle of them. That way, my parenthesis always get closed and I don't have to worry about it. This also works for {}, [], , and /**/. I hope this helps all you aspiring typists.

SuSE

Journal Journal: Not new to Linux

I'm not new to Linux, but I finally started using SuSE almost full time last week. I thought I'd never be able to break away from Windows and I'm still trapped by it when I want to play an old game, but now I'm not so worried about what I will do if MS decides they want more money from me. Now I can just tell them to stick it because I can build my own systems and run my own choice of OS. And all you spammers and script kiddies can quit sending me Windows Viruses.. you should send Linux viruses instead (not that I was stupid enough to open them in the first place). Oh and Evolution rocks, you should really check into it.
