"Mr. Cantor can't run as a third-party candidate. Virginia law forbids candidates who lose primary elections from appearing on the general election ballot. It is not immediately clear if he will mount a write-in campaign , as did Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R., Alaska) after losing a 2010 GOP Senate primary." — The Wall Street Journal

Comment Does swerving (/ Choosing) improve the situation? (Score 1) 800

It's not clear to me that swerving is going to improve the situation. It seems possible to me that swerving may expose the vehicle to increased danger. If swerving leads to a rollover or an angle with less crumple zone material it may increase the danger to occupants of the vehicle. "Don't Steer, hit the deer."

Swerving could also result in the vehicle traveling into areas where it should not ever be. A sidewalk, a median, a house, etc. Persons in those areas are not acceptable alternative impact targets as they should have a reasonable expectation of not being exposed to traffic danger.

Comment I wish the first company with Autodrive was BUICK (Score 1) 287

Seriously. [though I'll take mod +funny too] Buick drivers (typically elderly) would benefit greatly from this technology as it would grant them improved safety and autonomy. And society as a whole would benefit as the elderly with autodrive would present fewer road hazards, and would be able to stay out of assisted living for a longer time thus helping to keep the cost of assisted living down.

And within 30 years, I'll need cars to do the driving for ME!

I can't wait.

I think there is a common failure to understand how belief works. You've used the word "choose" in regards to belief as though belief were a matter of volition. I do not believe that the process of belief works like that. I think it is an involuntary process.

Perhaps a better understanding of the process of belief would help us to correct errant beliefs?

"Human Level AI"? Humans aren't exactly doing a wonderful job out there on the streets.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the current autonomous systems are already safer than human drivers. Are they going to be infallible? No. But we need to compare the overall safety rates of computer controlled vehicles vs. human controlled vehicles and see what is better.
