Ubuntu Replaces F-Spot With Shotwell 361

climenole writes "Finally! The much discussed F-Spot vs. Shotwell battle is over. The new default image organizer app for Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 is going to be Shotwell. This is a much-needed change; F-Spot was simply not enough. Most of the times when I tried F-Spot, it just keeps crashing on me. Shotwell on the other hand feels a lot more solid and is better integrated with the GNOME desktop. Shotwell is also completely devoid of Mono."

Bill To Ban All Salt In Restaurant Cooking 794

lord_rotorooter writes "Felix Ortiz, D-Brooklyn, introduced a bill that would ruin restaurant food and baked goods as we know them. The measure (if passed) would ban the use of all forms of salt in the preparation and cooking of food for all restaurants or bakeries. While the use of too much salt can contribute to health problems, the complete banning of salt would have negative impacts on food chemistry. Not only does salt enhance flavor, it controls bacteria, slows yeast activity and strengthens dough by tightening gluten. Salt also inhibits the growth of microbes that spoil cheese."

Your bill doesn't go down because the majority of Americans don't understand that they are paying for their "free" or "discounted" phone over the life of the contract. They think they really got a free phone or a discount. They figure their monthly bill is strictly covering their monthly usage of the service. Therefore, the cell phone service providers can get away with it.

Really...Really??? Who do you think provides money to the soup kitchens and homeless shelters? That's right, it's rich people. What makes you think that rich people don't deserve to have the money they have? The majority of "Wealthy" people (at least in the USA) are people who worked hard for the money they have. They deserve every penny of it an more. Most of them are people who have put in endless hours in order to grow their small businesses into something that makes them profit and provides jobs for others. Those who aren't small business owners, are simply people who lived on less than they make, and saved as much as they could, and after living frugally and saving for 20 or 30 years, they are now multimillionaires. Then what do they do with that money they have saved and invested? They give it to churches, they give it to soup kitchens, they give it to the poor and needy.

Class warfare is a foolish thing. The rich have no reason to hate the poor. The rich have no reason to "attack" the poor. I would wager that any ware that exists between the poor and the rich was started by the poor. Not the poor in general, but the poor who are too lazy to try to get ahead. The poor would be much better off befriending the rich as a rich man will always be willing to help his friend, but if the poor make themselves the enemy of the rich, all the rich can do is defend themselves, and to some people that is going to look like an attack.

I was taught that the proper way to store admin passwords for an emergency situation (such as admin gets hit by bus) was to
1. Write each password on an individual piece of paper
2. Seal each piece of paper in an envelope
3. Store the envelopes in a Safe/Deposit box that a limited number of people have access to, (company owner, CTO, CEO, IT Manager)
4. Put policy in place that requires passwords to be changed and re-recorded any time the envelope it is stored in is opened.

It may seem low tech, but it is probably the best solution for a small to medium sized business.

I don't think they were trying to implicate our new President in this with the title, it was more of an implication that those announcing it were trying to announce the breach while most of the nation was distracted by the inauguration in hopes that it might fall under the radar of the news media.

Submission + - MS says: Linux is inappropriate language

mocm writes: "The Inquirer has a story about a guy who wanted to use "linux" as his XBox Motto and got the message that this is inappropriate language. I tried it myself and got the same result. It seems that "linux" is on the same level as "sucks" and "baka" which it also won't accept. It will accept "linuxx" though and also "msbaka""

Submission + - Test Whether ISPs Are Modifying Your Web Pages (washington.edu)

csreis writes: Last month we learned that "Some ISPs are resorting to a new tactic to increase revenue: inserting advertisements into web pages requested by their end users." Have you wondered how often this is happening? And whether it's happened to you? The University of Washington security and privacy group and ICSI have created a measurement infrastructure to help answer these questions. Please come visit our site and help out with our experiments. In the process, we'll help you figure out if some "party in the middle" (like your ISP) might be modifying your web content in flight. We plan to share our overall results with the public.
