Comment Re:Never gonna happen, because of how OSS works. (Score 1) 299

If you want to use pro audio, you want to be able to mix the low latency, high sampling rate stream together with the regular OS/Desktop audio.

Why on earth would you want to mix your professionally sounding audio with every freaking app that goes "ding" or "boing" or "you've got mail"? To me, that sounds like the perfect way to ruin everything.

I WANT my music production app to grab the sound card for itself, so no "ding" or "boing" can touch it.

This. Maybe GP is talking way above my head but that just sounded like a very bizarre requirement.

Another vote for vomit-inducing. DICE please take notice because it was strongly conveyed in comments of the beta announcement: I, and many like me, have had /. our homepage for 15+ yrs and read it several times a day. If you go with this godawful layout I expect you'll be lucky to have 10% of your current traffic. I will certainly not be one of those remaining... It makes me sad that a single company can singlehandedly kill a beloved site/brand like this... It now seems inevitable...

a complete answer would be Python and C++, because numpy/scipy can't do everything and Python is still very slow for number-crunching.

That's why more people should check out Cython. It's basically it's own language modeled closely after Python but uses C-like language constructions when optimizations are helpful. I quite liked it when I checked it out, but I haven't been following it much recently.

that "flat", pastel, square look. Like, Windows 8. Or new iOS.

There needs to be a word for this: eliminating functionality in the name of creating a "new" way of doing things.

"GNOMEing" something I propose. Kind of like I use "Borging" something up whenever some significant other rearranges the decor for no good reason like the Borg on Star Trek.

Holy shit! From the article:

Witnesses told police that the car, a late-1990s or early 2000s model, slowed quickly and swerved before hitting Vidal and continuing north on Hillandale Road.

It certainly sounds like a sad "prank" as you said. WTF? I've never heard of this but I know Americans (as I am one) hate bicyclists with a passion, but this phenomenon (if generally true like you suggest) is fucking crazy...

Oh god, mod this up please. /. has really gone down the tubes since CmdrTaco left and DICE bought them. I really don't understand why I still come here (or even still have /. as my homepage anymore). A few more articles like this and I'm gone for good... Sad really, because /. has been my homepage since about '98-'99... Let's see if this gets deleted like some of my other posts criticizing them...

Comment Re:Zotero is good (Score 3, Informative) 87

I believe all the features you mentioned are included in Zotero, and it can do indexing across pdfs it stores. You should check it out as they are rather responsive to updates and it is open source (and free!) Also, since it is a Firefox plugin, it can detect that you need to be behind a proxy automagically when appropriate, and so it makes adding new citations quite easy. I'm not a developer on it, but just a rather happy user! The only thing I miss from EndNote is an easy way to search Pubmed and pull citations that way, but I suspect they are working on it (or may have added it?) because I've seen other people request this feature in the forums.

Comment Re:Zotero is good (Score 1) 87

Another happy Zotero user. The fact that it can typically strip citation info directly (and save/store!) pdfs is a killer feature that EndNote doesn't even have I think (at least my old version about 10). And it makes it easy to distribute whole libraries (including pdf docs) to colleagues to boot.
