Submission + - NSA was the sole editor of ISO crypto-PRNG standard

Sara Chan writes: A Congressman, Alan Grayson, has sent a letter to the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper. The letter asks several questions, in particular, this one: "How did the NSA become the sole editor of the ISO 18031 specification?" ISO 18031 specifies a model for a pseudorandom number generator that is suitable for cryptography. Thus, according to the letter, the NSA was the sole editor of an ISO cryptographic standard. The letter will probably not do much, though, given Clapper's prior perjury.

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Should I fight against online voting in our municipality?

RobinH writes: Our small-ish municipality (between 10,000 to 15,000 in population) has recently decided to switch to online voting. I should note that they were previously doing voting-by-mail. I have significant reservations about online voting, particularly the possibility of vote-selling and the general lack of voter secrecy, not to mention the possible lack of computer security. However, it's only a municipal election, and apparently a lot of municipalities around here are already doing online voting. I'm not sure if the rank and file citizens care, or if they would listen to my concerns. Should I bother speaking up, or should I ignore it since municipal elections are not that important anyway?

You don't become addicted to, for example, marihuana if you never touch it. If I occasionally drink alcohol, then yes, I'm at risk of becoming an alcoholic. If I never touch marihuana, my risk of becoming addicted to marihuana is zero. My feeling is that you assume that everyone will occasionally try some drugs. And once that happens, the risk of becoming an addict becomes non-zero. I claimed that responsibility decides whether you resist the temptation to experiment with drugs or not.

If you want to present an opposing argument, feel free to do that. But I would prefer if you keep the insults to yourself. Unless that is your addiction.

The largest amount of alcohol I drunk on single occasion was at about 3/4 litre of wine. Still walked home on my own, no problem. I occasionally drink one glass of of brandy (5cl) when invited to birthday party or something like that. It's a tradition here. I don't drink beer. I never smoked cigarettes. I never tried marihuana, nor any other drugs ... anything like that. Never. I have no problem saying 'no' when a friend wants to pour me another one. Or leave the full glass standing on the table, if he does not listen. The idea of consuming some substance with the goal of altering my mental state is alien to me. I should do something that reduces my ability to handle myself? No way. It would create danger for myself and people around me. That would be irresponsible.

If you think that responsibility or lack thereof is the deciding fator, then you really are a moron.

I do think that it is responsibility that stops me from getting drunk or experimenting with drugs. And I do think that with that approach I'm not going to become an addict. Does it mean I'm a moron?

Did you actually try that? On windows you can use free .doc viewer to verify how will word render your document. I believe that the mess will be comparable to mess created just by using a different version of MS office. I.e. not significant.

Most countries do have spy agencies. And they often do have some reasons for that. But do they spy on their allies? Do they spy on general public? Care to to link some info about countries that do the spying and that are not in G8 and are not China or Korea?

Sure, you were joking. But you are just trying to show that "everybody does it". The point is not only that that is not an excuse. The point is that it is not even remotely true.

Submission + - US 'Kidnapped' Hacker who is Son of Russian Member of Parliament (ibtimes.co.uk)

DavidGilbert99 writes: Over the weekend the US arrested 30-year-old Russian hacker Roman Valerevich Seleznev charging him with numerous counts of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft for stealing hundreds of thousand of credit card details during 2009 to 2011. On Tuesday it was revealed that Seleznev is the son of Russian member of parliament Valery Seleznev who said he had not been able to speak to his son but added: "This is a monstrous lie and a provocative act."

Out of interest - what makes a lawyer so special that he can talk to the cops? Are lawyers vaccinated against cop-tricks or something?
