Submission + - Politicians wising up on game legislation?

Blackjack writes: Ars Technica looks at recent failures to pass laws regulating the sales of violent video games and asks whether politicians are finally wising up to First Amendment issues and the costs associated with lawsuits resulting from the laws. Recent attemps to pass video game legislation in Mississippi, Utah, and Indiana have either failed or been put on indefinite hold. 'Now, state lawmakers are more cognizant of the constitutionality issues at stake. The judicial landscape is littered with the charred husks of laws passed by Illinois, Washington, Michigan, California, Louisiana, and others. All of them tried in some way or another to regulate the sale of violent video games to children, and all of them were struck down on First Amendment grounds.'

Submission + - A five-gear space rocket engine

Roland Piquepaille writes: "Georgia Tech researchers have had a brilliant idea. Rocket engines used today to launch satellites run at maximum exhaust velocity until they reach orbit. For a car, this would be analog to stay all the time in first gear. So they have designed a new space rocket which works as it has a five-gear transmission system. This space engine uses 40 percent less fuel than current ones by running on solar power while in space and by fine-tuning exhaust velocity. But as it was designed with funds from the U.S. Air Force, military applications will be ready before civilian ones. Here is how this new rocket engine works."

Submission + - Has geckostocktrader.com been HACKED ??

They have a special VIP web address for certain people to sign up for FREE (for potential site purchaser evaluation purposes I presume).

and signup as normal you are automatically made a VIP instantly and you can trade on geckostocktrader for free whereas normally you would have to pay in order to fund the jackpot.

Or should we let them know they left the backdoor open?"

Submission + - Mac's and Disaster Recovery plans?

An anonymous reader writes: My current organization is working on a revised DR plan. The systems administration team is pushing for the use of Mac laptops for DR. One such example of a need for it is the event that a virus takes out our windows based network and a non windows OS is needed for recovery. A non windows OS that has full hardware and software support to avoid different vendors passing the buck. Unfortunately we are receiving a lot of push back from management which seems to be caused by a knee-jerk reaction based on the outdated idea that "Mac is for artists, not business". Is anyone out there including Mac's in their DR plan, or for any related reasons? I cannot imagine we are the only people who see a huge boon to using Mac's in security related matters.

Submission + - Canada quashes secret trials

shadowspar writes: "In Canada, a non-citizen who has a Security Certificate issued against them can be detained indefinitely without charge and be tried on the basis of secret evidence that they cannot see or respond to. The Supreme Court of Canada has just struck them down as unconstitutional, stating that they violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The full ruling is online as well."

Recovering a Wrecked RAID 175

Dr. Eggman writes "Tom's Hardware recently posted an article specifying how the professionals at Kroll Ontrack recover data from a RAID array that has suffered a hard drive failure, allowing for recovery of even RAID 5 arrays suffering two failures. The article is quick to warn this is costly, however, and points out the different types of hard drive failures that occur, only some of which are repairable. Ultimately the article concludes that consistent backups and other good practices are the best solution. Still, it provides an interesting look into the world of data after death."

Submission + - Open source apps vendor drops attribution goes GPL

Anonymous Coward writes: "Open source applications vendor, Alfresco, has dropped its MPL+Attribution license and elected to go 100% GPL. While infrastructure companies like Red Hat and MySQL have long pursued such a license strategy, Alfresco becomes the first commercial open source vendor to completely GPL its enterprise content management application. The company's license model is very similar to Red Hat's RHEL/Fedora model. The move comes after months of sometimes rancorous debate as to whether MPL+Attribution constitutes an approved OSI license or not. It remains to be seen how Alfresco competitors like Microsoft Sharepoint and Documentum will respond to an innovative, enterprise-class ECM system...that just so happens to be free."

Submission + - Firefox releases update to fix critical exploit

MGOB writes: "Mozilla published releases 1.5.0.10/2.0.0.2 this morning to fix a critical security flaw in the Firefox web browser. The problem lies in how Firefox handles writes to the 'location.hostname' DOM property. The vulnerability allows malicious websites to manipulate authentication cookies for third-party sites. A demo/check of the issue can be found here."

Submission + - Samsung increases speeds of GDDR4 memory by 66%

Vinit writes: "Samsung Electronics has increased the speed of world's fastest memory — the GDDR4 memory by two-third. The firm has increased the data transfer speed to 4Gb/s (2.0GHz) from current 2.4Gb/s. With the speed up by 66 percent, you'll get excellent performance from your system while playing games, animation or editing a video. The high-end applications requires good speed because they move huge volumes of video simultaneously; so as your memory speed increases, you get better performance. The new 4Gb/s graphics memory, offered in a 512Mb density, has a 32-bit data bus configuration. GDDR4 uses JEDEC-approved standards for signal noise reduction to help attain the highest possible speed. "Our new GDDR4 memory will add even more zip in video applications, making gaming, computer-aided design and video editing a lot faster than ever before," said Mueez Deen, marketing director, graphics memory, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. "This will enable ultra-smooth movements in animation, making games incredibly realistic, resulting in a truly immersive experience," he added. The memory is ready for customer sampling this month. http://www.pclaunches.com/other_stuff/samsung_incr eases_speeds_of_gddr4_memory_by_66_percent.php"

Anonymous from UCI writes: "CNN.com — "A team of geologists and engineers hope the plan, believed to have never been tried before, will reduce the amount of mud flowing from the geyser at a gas exploration site on Java island by up to 70 percent. The mud is now surging out at a rate equivalent to about a million oil drums a day." "Engineers will release five of the chained cement balls, each weighing up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds), and monitor the effect before gradually releasing more balls into the hole,..." http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/02/23/indone sia.volcano.ap/index.html?eref=rss_topstories"
