I would strongly recommend a Glock or S&W M&P and shooting all of them first before buying.

    The 1911 is very forgiving and easy to shoot well but the Glock/M&P teach better habits, have higher capacity, and are much, much easier to maintain. This is coming from a guy who loves 1911s but carries a Glock 19 concealed. Buy a 9mm; ammo is half the cost of .45 and remember, the pistol's cost is only the initial cost of what is a lot of spending. You NEED to shoot a lot to get good. 500 rds a month is a good start. You will also need several mags; at least 6.
