Comment Abortion and lead (Score 1) 407

"A 2007 study by Jessica Reyes at Amherst College stated: "By the year 2020, when the effects of the Clean Air Act and Roe v. Wade would be complete, violent crime could be as much as 70% lower than it would be if lead had remained in gasoline, and as much as 35-45% lower than it would be if abortion had never been legalized. At the same time, history suggests that other unknown factors would have increased crime by perhaps 3-5% per year."[9]"

The Texas case just exposes (again) the fallacy that the US has the best healthcare in the world.
This hospital made too many amateur mistakes to count:
- Sent the guy home with antibiotics when he presented with a fever after travel to Ebola infected area.
- Did not institute full isolation protocol until three days after he was admitted (thus exposing nurses and other patients to the disease).
- Did not follow CDC protocol even after confirmed Ebola.

There is no fusion energy. They have a design that they think might work (after a lot of engineering time to sort out a bunch of issues like metal science, heat transfer, radioactive waste, turbines, etc.) There is no prototype. They say they can do it in 10 years with a very aggressive schedule.
I'd take all of this with a truckload of salt.
Fusion power has always been 25 years in the future.

I recently saw that India is taking an innovative approach to solar installations. They are installing the panels over irrigation canals. This has a few benefits... less evaporation of water because of shading and the government already owns the land for the canals so no land needs to be acquired and no land is taken out of food production. They have thousands of miles of canals.

The Republicans have been blocking the appointment of a new U.S. Surgeon General because of guns. The NRA doesn't want anyone to know that guns are a health hazard.
Also, the Republicans have gutted funding for the CDC Emergency Response (down about 50% in the past few years).
So, Republicans are very bad for your health.
