Comment Apps suck, but works great as a media player (Score 1) 217

Yes, I agree the apps are useless, but my Samsung SmartTV is great for playing .mp4 and .mkv files. It will even play .mt2s files you can find on Blu-Ray disks. I just plug in a 1 TB WD Passport portable hard drive to my TV, and use this as my media center. No extra devices need to be turned on. It can also play directly from computer shares, but my wireless access of the TV to the living room is quite poor.

Comment 7200 RPM data drives (Score 1) 238

Instead of paying $179 for a 3TB 7200 TB drive, it makes more sense to pay $129 for a 3TB 5400 RPM drive such as this Hitachi:

and then add a small SSD with the savings for the OS/apps. The new BIOS/chipsets even allow you to combine them so that the SSD is used as a large cache drive.

Comment 15.5 MB on Windows (Score 2) 554

Back then I remember hearing about this Phoenix web browser referred to as Mozilla Lite that was just a few MB and I loved it. Now I have watched as Firefox has grown, but the bloat has as well. Well at least 15 MB is still nothing these days.

Comment Good show (Score 2) 392

Fringe is one of my favorites, like a modern day X-files and the only show that my wife will watch on TV. I was really surprised to learn that it may be canceled, especially after it just got the 2011 People's Choice Award for best Sci-fi/Fantasy show. I guess it isn't dumb downed enough like all the other shows that people want to watch which good good ratings. I am ashamed.

Comment Great for Kids (Score 1) 459

I bought an Archos 101 Android based tablet ($294 on Amazon) for my daughter. A touchscreen interface is very intuitive for a 2 year old. Before she always pointed to the Youtube related video on my computer and say "How bout this one?" and I would use the mouse and click on it. Now she can just touch the video she wants.

It's more of a toy/learning experience for me, but it is great for her to keep her occupied. I have many kid apps like drawing, connect the dots, memory game, color Mickey Mouse, etc. on it. I have all of her favorite YouTube videos downloaded to it along with some Disney movies and videos of her. She can also finger scroll through all the pictures we took of her which will keep her entertained for awhile. Great for at home, in the car or restaurants, or on a plane. It's not perfect as she is still learning the interface and accidentally presses the home button or a link in an app that starts up the web browser to rate it or to email, but generally it works out quite well especially that the battery life is about 8 hours.

I have to agree and glad someone else commented on this. This has been the only time in my PC experience that I have ever been awed by PC sound - similar to being awed by graphics from Doom and then Glquake. Star Control 1 had midi music, but after I bought SC2, my college roommate and I were astonished by what we heard. Digitized music (Amiga mod style) coming from a game that came on a few 1.44MB floppy disks, not to mention that the music was good and I still load them up sometimes.
