Not many, but you'll get blown to bits (and probably podded) in unsecured space by pirate kiddies going "lolollol ZERG RUSH kekekekeke!!1". The Shuttle has no weapons or shields. And no warp drive.

No, but I hear the Tech II foam can be pretty dangerous.

Copy Protection Backfires on Blu-ray 378

An anonymous reader writes "The first two Blu-ray releases to hit the market encrypted with BD+ (an extra layer of protection designed to stave off hackers) are wreaking havoc on innocent consumers. As High-Def Digest reports, this week's Blu-ray releases of 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer' and 'The Day After Tomorrow' won't play back at all on at least two Blu-ray players, while load times on other players (including the PS3) are delayed by up to two minutes. 'The most severe problems have been reported on Samsung's BDP-1200 and LG's BH100, which are both said to be incapable of playing back the discs at all. Less catastrophic issues (error messages and playback stutter) have been reported for Samsung's BDP-1000. The discs appear to play back fine on all other Blu-ray players ... Calls placed to both Samsung and LG customer support revealed that both manufacturers are aware of the issue, and that both are working on firmware updates to correct it. Samsung promised a firmware update within 'a couple' weeks, while LG said an update is expected in 3-4 days.'"

mykepredko writes: "Originally schduled for September 17th, the first man-made object to orbit the Earth was launched. Most people attribute Sputnik as the work of Sergei Korolev, but it actually was the brainchild of Mikhail Tikhonravov, as recounted in this EDN article."

Submission + - Arctic Pole Lost 23% of ice in the last 2 years. (bitbistro.com)

joao.r.silva writes: "NASA is examining data that shows a reduction of 23% of Arctic Pole Ice in the last two years (from 2005 to 2007).
This total Ice lost has the size of California and Texas combined.
This summer temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius where observed by explorers in the Canadian Icy regions, far above the normal for the region.
Scientists aren't optimists about this situation, it's the biggest melt ever recorded and more important the trend is there to continue.

Submission + - Trans-Atlantic Robots

An anonymous reader writes: In the summer of 2008, teams from a host of countries will compete in The Microtransat Challenge with the hope of gaining the honor of having built the first autonomous sailboat to cross the Atlantic. The results of Microtransat 2007, a smaller scale preliminary race, were recently announced. The winner was the team from Austria; team RoBoat, for having completed 24 hours of autonomous sailing. I am strongly considering joining this competition before the year is out, and would appreciate any insight from the Slashdot community. The boats can be up to 4 meters in length, and therefore capable of carrying a full-sized onboard computer (operating system of your choice). Time is limited however, so I would like to avoid as many hardware issues as possible and get straight to the difficult problem of writing the AI. So how would you design a seamless interface between sensors and actuators to the high-level code?
