Ophion writes: July 31, 1790 — The U.S. Patent Office opened for business and granted the first U.S. patent (TIFF plugin required) to Samuel Hopkins of Philadelphia for "making pot and pearl ashes," a cleaning formula used in soapmaking. The patent was signed by both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
