Comment Because BT ports are closed on corp. firewalls (Score 1) 591

This would be the main reason this would fail. BitTorrent ports are closed at most corporate firewalls, and I don't see them opening up another set of ports. Plus usually they mirror packages/updates internally, so 1 download only... why not this download from the 1 "trusted" source (the vendor, as far as you can trust them).

I've never seen a 486DX2 boot so fast. Until the magic puff of smoke came out of the back :-/ I got everything replaced in warranty though.

Unusual, Obscure, and Useful Linux Distros 221

angry tapir writes "Most people will be familiar with some of the big names when it comes to Linux — distributions like Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Debian, and Mandriva. Most of the well-known Linux distros are designed to be used as general-purpose desktop operating systems or installed on servers. But beyond these distros are hundreds of others either designed to appeal to very specific audiences or to fulfill the somewhat niche needs of some users. We rounded up some of the most interesting Linux distributions that you might not have heard of."

Firefox should already be compliant (from what I've heard). It will pop up a warning if the known cert is different from a new one (if someone hijacked the domain). The key of course is: how do you guarantee that the original key is correct? by sending it through other means (USB key, mail etc.) and have the user install the cert manually.

Mass Effect To Invade the Big Screen 142

UgLyPuNk writes "This could be a good thing or a bad thing: EA has just confirmed that it's making Mass Effect into a movie. The franchise has been acquired by Legendary Pictures, which is best known for its co-productions of The Dark Knight, Clash of the Titans, 300, Watchmen, and, um, The Hangover, as part of a co-financing agreement with Warner Bros."

Well, we'll just see how well it's done. If you can pick 'em up at e-Bay for half price within 3-6 months it has failed. If not it does fill a need for the buyers.

Interesting and very valid observation. I think it can be mitigated by 1 thing: having an unfiltered out stream on your firewall, but a throttled in stream. That way he can't complain about the network being slow (it isn't if you copy a file over), only saving to the coworkers system will take a very long time.
