Comment Re:144KWh on my last bill (Score 1) 327

Well, different from a central HVAC, where you set the thermostat and forget, with individual units I make a decision when to turn on and in which rooms. In the end, I only use cooling when temp gets higher than 26C (79F), and only on rooms being used, taking care to close doors. I calculate in a given week I have a total of about 20 hours of AC running, give it or take it.

And only during summer, winters are mild enough that no heating is needed (it would be electric if needed, not propane or oil)

Comment 144KWh on my last bill (Score 1) 327

Weather turning warmer here in the south hemisphere, so there's more A/C. Should peak at some 200KWh at the height of summer.

And I telecommute, so I'm at home most of the time, but usually only one room has the A/C turned on (it's not central, but very efficient inverter split units on each important room)

Other costs are the refrigerator, lighting, TV gear, etc.

Read the article, it is very interesting and he makes some very compelling arguments as to why this is a bit too much hype...

Submission + - Petrobras confirms major oil find off Brazil coast (google.com)

overmoderated writes: Brazil's state-owned energy giant Petrobras says it has confirmed the presence of significant quantities of light oil in deep waters off the country's southeastern coast.

The company said in a statement released late Monday that the high-grade oil was in the Carcara well, located 230 kilometers (140 miles) off the coast of the Sao Paulo state, in the BM-S-8 block.

The find had been announced March 20 and drilling has been underway since then to determine the total thickness of the oil reservoirs as well as the presence of deeper zones of interest.

Submission + - United lost a 10 year old child in minor service, outsourced the service (typepad.com) 1

TheNextCorner writes: "United was flying Phoebe as an unaccompanied minor on June 30th, from San Francisco to Chicago, with a transfer to Grand Rapids. No one showed-up in Chicago to help her transfer, so although her plane made it, she missed the connection. Most crucially, United employees consistently refused to take action to help assist or comfort Phoebe or to help her parents locate her despite their cries for help to numerous United employees.

"When he asked why she could not say but put him on hold. When she came back she told him that in fact the unaccompanied minor service in Chicago simply “forgot to show up” to transfer her to the next flight. He was dumbfounded as neither of us had been told in writing or in person that United outsourced the unaccompanied minor services to a third party vendor.""

Submission + - Possible Egyptian Pyramids Found via Google Earth

x_IamSpartacus_x writes: In an article being carried by discovery.com, Two possible pyramid complexes might have been found in Egypt, according to a Google Earth satellite imagery survey. Located about 90 miles apart, "the sites contain unusual grouping of mounds with intriguing features and orientations" said satellite archaeology researcher Angela Micol of Maiden, N.C. According to Micol, both sites have been verified as undiscovered by Egyptologist and pyramid expert Nabil Selim, whose findings include the pyramid called Sinki at Abydos and the Dry Moat surrounding the Step pyramid complex at Saqqara. The researcher has previously located several possible archaeological sites with Google Earth, including a potential underwater city off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula. The sites have been sent to Egyptologists and researchers for further investigation and "ground truthing," she said.

Personally, I'm sick and tired of small theaters only offering you the 3D version of a given movie. I rather see it in normal 2D, without having to put up with dirty and inconvenient passive glasses, and dizziness in scenes with fast motion ...

At home, for gaming, with a good TV and glasses things might be different, but I'm not much of a gamer myself to justify the extra expense.
