Comment Re:Yet another patent troll (Score 1) 225

I think Apple can come up with enough "prior artwork" for this one.

Changing "prior art" to "prior artwork" paints an interesting picture of a potential courtroom exchange...

"I would like to present Exhibit A, "Motherboard Descending a Staircase" by Ed Picasso, painted in January 2006. Despite its neo-cubist style, this work shows an example of "client hardware architecture" much more clearly than the patent troll--I mean, defendant's patent documents.

You sir are a sick puppy lol :-P

English Wikipedia Gets Two Millionth Article 125

reybrujo writes to inform us of a milestone for the English-language Wikipedia: the posting of its two millionth article. At the time of this posting there is uncertainty over which article achieved the milestone. "Initial reports stated that the two millionth article written was El Hormiguero, which covers a Spanish TV comedy show. Later review of this information found that this article was most likely not two million, and instead a revised list of articles created around two million has been generated, and is believed to be correct to within 3 articles. The Wikimedia foundation, which operates the site, is expected to make an announcement with a final decision, which may require review of the official servers' logs."

Submission + - Mobile phone causes medical equipment failure

fredrikv writes: Dutch researchers report that using mobile phones near critical care medical equipment is dangerous and could switch off ventilators or disrupt pacemakers. They tested 61 medical devices were with GSM (GPRS data transfer) and UMTS (3G) radio signals commonly used with mobile phones. In total, 48 incidents were reported with 26 of the devices and one third of the incidents were hazardous or significant. The distance from antenna to the medical device was only 3 cm but one incident happened on a distance of 3 m. So don't go wireless while visiting the intensive care unit.

victor77 writes: "[Breaking News] This extended support becomes significant at a time when there is an ongoing discussion over the ISO approval of Microsoft's competing format OOXML. The format has been rejected by the ISO committe and awaiting second round in February 2008. While OpenOfice.org's format ODF, which has strong backing of Sun and IBM, is already an ISO standard."

mrneutron2003 writes: Sony, purveyor of extremely expensive consoles and rootkits, has launched an interesting portable media player that just has to be seen to be believed. Is it too quirky for western markets? Perhaps. The following video does some justice to understanding what it is, and how freaky it is too. http://www.fastsilicon.com/off-the-wall/sony-intro duces-the-rolly.html

Submission + - iD and Valve violating GPL

frooge writes: With the recent release of iD's catalog on Steam, it appears DOSBox is being used to run the old DOS games for greater compatibility. According to a post on the Halflife2.net forums, however, this distribution does not contain a copy of the GPL license that DOSBox is distributed under, which violates the license. According to the DOSBox developers, they were not notified that it was being used for this release.

Indiana University Dumps Google for ChaCha 211

theodp writes "Come Monday, no more Indiana University searches will be powered by computer-driven Google. Only by people-powered ChaCha. The move was announced by new IU President Michael McRobbie, who until recently sat on ChaCha's Board of Directors (5-29 SEC filing, PDF). IU will draft hundreds of librarians and IT employees to be ChaCha Guides for the university's websites, although a FAQ accompanying IU's press release tells librarians not to expect any checks for their efforts from ChaCha, which IU notes is backed by Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Compaq founder Rod Canion."
