Comment Ian M Banks (Score 1) 392

Space opera author Iain M Banks' spaceships (from his various Culture novels) are propelled by "traction fields" which engage with the "energy grid" (sic) underlying the universe. Banks readily admits that this is purest gibberish with no basis in any known science. Perhaps in light of this research he can backtrack and claim to have been describing a form of quantum propulsion all along?

Pirate Bay's Anonymity Service Enters Beta Testing 137

schliz writes "Developers of The Pirate Bay have launched their new Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to some 180,000 pre-registered beta testers. An e-mail to beta testers read. 'IPREDator does not store any personal details about its clients. IPREDator does not store any traffic habits you might have. IPREDator is the key to a free internet in the renaissance of censorship!' The new service was launched to protect file sharers in response to the Swedish Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Directive (IPRED) that went into effect in April."

You've Dropped Your Landline — Now What? 635

smurphmeister writes "My wife and I recently moved up to the world of cell phones, after taking our sweet time to make sure this whole newfangled technology was going to stick around. We moved the old landline phone number to her phone, so we're disconnected from the pole. Now the question is, what to do with the copper already in our house? My first thought was an intercom system, but that just seems so old school! So what ideas do you all have for what to do with the 4 little wires running to every room of my house?"

I'm more interested in a mobile phone YouTube to report misdeeds and abuses by police officers.

I assume you're familiar with this ongoing investigation?

If it wasn't for mobile phone cameras, the completely unprovoked police brutality which led to Ian Tomlinson's death would been neatly covered up with a bogus "natural causes" finding.

Submission + - College Students Illegally Sharing

An anonymous reader writes: The IndyStar has an article about how copyright infringement is rampant on college campuses here. The article explains that if the schools do nothing about it, they could be subject to lawsuits. However, the punishments used by the school don't appear to be too harsh for the first couple offenses.

Journal Journal: Review: Wild Hogs 1

I attended a screening of Wild Hogs tonight. It stars Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, John Travolta and William H. Macy, as middle-aged professionals who ride bikes as a hobby, and are each going through a midlife crisis. Therein lies the irony; All of the stars have been in major roles in blockbusters at some point in their lives, but haven't had much exposure Hollywood since. Essentially, unintentionally, the actors play themselves. It's for this reason I went to see the movie.

Submission + - ICANN gives RegisterFly ultimatum; accreditation

kimvette writes: "A letter from ICANN to Registerfly has been published at http://www.icann.org/correspondence/ for public review. Apparently the issues with RegisterFly are even worse than revealed a couple of days ago and they have 15 working days to address outstanding issues and come into compliance with ICANN's guidelines.

A snippet from the Conclusion section of the letter:

As noted above, section 5.3.4 of the Registrar Accreditation Agreement agreed in October 2004 between Registerfly and ICANN provides that notice of termination of Registerfly's accreditation may be given if these breaches are not cured within 15 working days.

Computer Business Review Online ran a story on this issue the other day and a new article is about to be published by them. Minute-by-minute developments of these issues can be learned at Registerflies.com, a "support" and customer advocate site set up in response to RegisterFly's ongoing poor customer service and fraudulent billing practices. Millions of customer domains remain under the jurisdiction of RegisterFly and customers' maintaining ownership and control of these domains is now in question.

Some are speculating the RegisterFly will be folding in the coming days, so if you have domains registered through them transfer them out NOW."

Submission + - Canada's Telus Ends Sales of Cell-Phone Porn

westlake writes: Telus, Canada's No. 2 phone company, has ended sales of soft core porn to it's cell phone customers following complaints from the Roman Catholic Church and others. Telus was the first North American carrier to offer adult content for download. $3 for stills, $4 for videos. Access to adult content on the web remains unrestricted, but Telus seems to have badly underestimated resistance to the public download of porn and the risks for a carrier in becoming a dealer in porn. Telus bows to pressure, ends phone porn downloads

An anonymous reader writes: This story from computerworld (keyword: scareware) was up for one day and has now disappeared. Infoworld still has the story. The issue is that I posted a comment and not only is my comment gone but the whole story (from computerworld). It's as if they never posted the story. But a search on computerworld.com's site (using "scarewaer") shows the summary of the story but it links to the web root (computerworld.com/). Skype Asks FCC to Open Cellular Networks 292

Milwaukee's_Best writes "Skype has just asked the FCC to force wireless phone companies to open their networks to all comers. Skype essentially wants to turn the wireless phone companies into just another network of the kind currently operated on the ground. This would require carriers to allow any phone to be used on their networks, and for any application. Users would simply purchase a voice or data plan (though these could easily converge into a data plan if VoIP calling is used) and then use the device of their choice to access the network of their choice. Think of it as network neutrality for cell networks. Given the competition that exists within the industry, is this needed?"
