Everyone in my clan has changed their minds on this purchase. We can't run our own dedicated servers now. We run 2 CoD4 servers (one FFA & other one TDM). Long before I joined the clan I played on these two because of the good ping I got, and because I like the regulars on there + the admins were cool. It's this sort of community that is being shattered by this move. I'll stick with MW and WaW for now.

Once developers start using GCD for their applications, you'll start noticing significant improvements in performance.

Shoot, I already noticed the difference on my 2.5 yr old Mac Pro (1.1). First boot on 10.6 and I was like "wow, feels like a new machine again". All of the bundled apps have been recompiled (64 bit) and cleaned up (and apparently take advantage of GCD everywhere possible). I really didn't think I would see that much of a difference with 10.6 and really only upgraded because I could for $29 (I mean at that price, why not right?) I am very happy with my $29 purchase thus far. I've only had to work through a couple app incompatibilities (and as I have been able to work around them just fine, I am happy.) This is of course just my experience thus far with 10.6. I have no hard benchmark numbers for you. But I noticed right away the smoothness it brought to my older Mac Pro. And it was an easier upgrade than going from 10.4 --> 10.5.

So far I've only had an issue with one program (or rather, a couple versions of the same program) in Snow Leopard. I do 3D renders in DAZ 3D's Carrara Pro 7. The first time I launched it, I had no text in the application. And I mean everywhere. No text on the menus, tabs... you name it. I also had Carrara 6 still on my system, so I launched it - same deal. Appears to be a font issue. So I went searching the DAZ 3D forums for topics about this issue and found a workaround.

Wow... honestly I can't believe the speed boost in everyday things that Snow Leopard gave to my 2.5 yr old Mac Pro today. Seriously, it feels like a new machine again. An anonymous reader writes "A group of hardware hackers has created a motherboard prototype that uses separate modules, each of which has its own processor, memory and storage. Each square cell in this design serves as a mini-motherboard and network node; the cells can allocate power and decide to accept or reject incoming transmissions and programs independently. Together, they form a networked cluster with significantly greater power than the individual modules. The design, called the Illuminato X Machina, is vastly different from the separate processor, memory and storage components that govern computers today."

Vacuum Leaks Lead To Another LHC Delay 224

Quoting: "The restart of the Large Hadron Collider has been pushed back further, following the discovery of vacuum leaks in two sectors of the experiment. The world's largest particle collider is now unlikely to restart before mid-November, according to a CERN press statement. The project had been expected to start again in October. To repair the leaks, which are from the helium circuit into the insulating vacuum, sectors 8-1 and 2-3 will have to be warmed from 80K to room temperature. Adjacent sub-sectors will act as 'floats,' while the remainder of the surrounding sectors will be kept at 80K, CERN said in the statement. The repair work will not have an impact on the vacuum in the beam pipe. CERN has pushed back the restart a number of times, as repair work has continued. To begin with, scientists said the LHC experiment would restart in April 2009. In May, CERN [said] that the restarted experiment could run through the winter to make up some of the lost time."

twitter writes "The US Postal Service has moved its Cobol package tracking software to HP machines running GNU/Linux. 1,300 servers handle 40 million transactions a day and cost less than the last system, which was based on a Sun Solaris environment." The migration took a year. The USPS isn't spelling how big the savings are, except that they are "significant."

Boone Pickens said Tuesday, and he's looking for a home for 687 giant wind turbines. Pickens has already ordered the turbines, which can stand 400 feet tall — taller than most 30-story buildings. 'When I start receiving those turbines, I've got to ... like I said, my garage won't hold them,' the legendary Texas oilman said. 'They've got to go someplace.' Pickens' company Mesa Power ordered the turbines from General Electric Co. — a $2 billion investment — a little more than a year ago. Pickens said he has leases on about 200,000 acres in Texas that were planned for the project, and he might place some of the turbines there, but he's also looking for smaller wind projects to participate in."
